Also Telegram is growing shadier day by day. Signal is the way to go.

Why are neurotypicals in charge of making up the social rules? They're not even very good at it.

Edit: A few people have interpreted the title as serious, so I wanna clarify that it was meant as a sarcastic joke about how little sense the neurotypical world makes to me, but it is still legitimately me asking for help understanding said neurotypical world....

Often people are looking for some sort of validation, even when it's not obvious.

If they say "I can't join you in the bar today, I have too much work to catch up on", "K." is not a good answer. Several aspects needs to be addressed, ideally:

  1. That's too bad
  2. Next time
  3. Commentary on the state of work: Keep your head above water/your boss is such a jerk/we'll make up for it after your deadline on Thursday/whatever, depending on the situation and your relationship.

Basically, it's a way to show that you care about what they're telling you. It can be a bit exhausting at times.

The spelling thing bothers me a lot. I don't want to catch bad habits of writing shitty just because it's whatever seems trendy at the moment.

People used to give me shit for not using smileys, so I started adding :) everywhere in text messages. Then people told me I seem passive aggressive because I use :) instead of emojis.

Joke's on them. I could never be arsed to use emojis outside of very specific contexts, and now gen Zs are making fun of them for looking like boomers with their dumb emoji use. Apparently I still come across as passive aggressive though.

Honestly, I think this might be on to something. RFK jr was not always a lunatic - before he went insane he did some truly great things in his career. He then gradually made a turn for the worse, ending up as the mentally insane candidate we know today. It honestly explains his political platform pretty well.

It also reminds me of that great infowars interview with a Sanders supporter (correctly?) observing that they have worms in their brains.

Is Linux Mint well adapted for touch screens?

I think I would go for GNOME if I were to use Linux with a touch screen. Then again, I'm using it anyway, so I'm probably biased.

How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food?

My local food bank can only provide 8 packages with referrals every time before you run out, and I have, but my situation hasn't improved financially due to various set backs and I'm struggling to feed myself. I've heard that supermarkets throw out massive amounts, but have never been in a position where dumpster diving seemed...

sab ,
@sab@kbin.social avatar

If you don't have any luck dumpster diving it might be worth checking if any of your local supermarkets (or even bakeries) are using Too Good to Go. They decide how much to put in the package, but a generous place will give you a bunch of food for very little money.

I think zoomers are young enough not to have the generational memory of how creepy mustaches are, so suddenly they're cool again. I'm afraid it'll last until the zoomers are old enough to be the creepy ones.

Full beards are great. I can go a week without any maintenance and still look presentable. Any other style of facial hair is just too much effort.

    I've been curious about trying out mbin, and this seems like a good instance to do it on. So I absolutely like option 2 the best.

    That said, I tried to sign up earlier today, and never received the registration email. Tried to sign up with an old Gmail account. Might be worth looking into. :)

    Gillian Welsh - Everything is Free.

    Great song about the difficulties of making a living off music now that everything is available for nothing. Father John Misty recorded a version when he was invited to the Spotify Sessions, which was a nice little fuck you to the people inviting him.

    A fun industry fact: Have A Cigar was sung by Roy Harper, as he happened to be in the studio and the members of Floyd thought he could be a good fit. Roy Harper is perhaps more known in the mainstream through the Zeppelin song Hats Off to (Roy) Harper than through his own recordings, though he's still alive and active.

    Harper didn't feel like he was appropriately compensated for his work on Have a Cigar, which is ironic considering the overall thematic.

    What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

    It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    Not happy with OrganicMaps? It's my personal favourite at least, and completely open source. Probably depends what your needs are. :)

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    It's just an app, yeah.

    OpenStreetMaps is amazing, but it is a map, not a whole ecosystem like Google Maps is. As a map I find it's often better than Google Maps, but what is still lacking are good front-ends implementing a wide range of functionality in a user friendly way.

    On desktop I often use GNOME Maps, but it leaves a lot to be desired still and is obviously intended for Linux users running GNOME.

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    Let's see if Loops can fill the gap. Not sure if an open source alternative could generate enough hype to be viable - maybe if TikTok is banned in the US or something.

    IDF sources: Gaza aid workers killed because 'officers on the ground do what they want' ( www.haaretz.com )

    The IDF and defense ministry claimed that the aid workers' killing resulted from poor coordination. Israeli army sources later refuted their claims, saying the incident has 'no connection to coordination' and was caused by the fact that 'every commander sets the rules for himself'...

    As genocide per definition requires internt, the argument that "whoops, it was an accident!" might actually hold up in court.

    Of course it is not an accident, and central authorities know exactly what they're doing. But this is what they're betting on, and time will tell if it works out for them.

    The genocide convention and the state of Israel were brothers in birth, both being responses to the atrocities of the Holocaust. This time around they will be reunited as enemies.

    But Twitter used to have a monopoly, and it doesn't any more.

    I can now follow an official white house account directly from Kbin, whereas yesterday i would have to sign up for either Twitter or Threads. That makes a difference. :)

    sab ,

    That's @potus, for those on platforms that can view microblogs and that are not defederated from Threads.

    Remember that comments are not federated to/from threads yet. If I understood correctly, likes are federated.

    sab ,

    Nope, and it doesn't seem to be on the agenda either. Kbin/Mbin is still the only platform(s) to try to bridge the two.

    I was always terrible at picking up on hints, but even when I did get the hint I was generally either not interested in pursuing something, too cowardly to pursue it, or I had a preference to go about things a bit slower.

    Sometimes women can be attractive and hint a lot, but once you've burned yourself once or twice you realize it's better to take things slow than to risk getting involved with someone more crazy than you can handle.

    Amongst people I am closer to and actually like I am absolutely oblivious at times, but I would much rather err on the side of friendship.

    I think we always assume our own communications are super clear, and we blame other people when they don't understand. That goes for flirting, but also everything else involving two or more people trying to communicate.

    /kbin another quick update ( kbin.social )

    Good morning, last week we managed to address pressing issues related to infrastructure. Thank you once again for your assistance, Piotr. sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    Well, the ones that federate with Meta will still be federated with those who don't. So it's really no different from what the Fediverse is already: Fragmented by design.

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    I'm not sure I see the benefit of this. The point that Wikipedia might eventually become corrupted is made moot by the permissive licensing of the information there. The main challenge of the Wiki format is with fact checking and ensuring quality, which is only made more complicated by having a federated platform.

    ActivityPub is great for creating the social web. The added benefit for non-social services is not obvious to me at all.

    That said, it's a cool proof of concept, and I'm sure it can be useful for certain types of federated content management - I just don't see how it could ever make sense as a Wikipedia alternative.

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    Then again, why would a fan page want to open for contributions from outside of that fan page? Why would the Star Wars wiki federate edits with the Startrek wiki? On which page of the wiki would this make sense?

    I just don't get it.

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    They're also not holding anyone hostage. I can see how people are tired of the whole "if you don't like it, fork it" argument, but Kbin, mbin, and Piefed are all perfectly viable and interoperable alternatives that are available already.

    sab ,
    @sab@kbin.social avatar

    Unless, of course, one blocks them. It's not perfect of course, but I think federation brings about an unique opportunity to decide how many fools one is willing to suffer. And the tools will only get better with time. :)

    I do agree with you though - kbin.social is a lovely place but it's large enough that it needs a proper moderation team.

    RE: Is Ernest still here? ( kbin.social )

    I check in here quite often, but for now, I'm just focusing on clearing spam and keeping the instance alive. Sometimes showing that things are being done is more work and way more stressful than the act of doing them, so I can relate to that.

    But it would probably be a good idea to get more admins on board - sometimes one needs to take a break, and a one-person moderation team for a page with this many users cannot be sustainable in the long run. But I guess getting to a point where that is feasible, not to mention finding qualified people, might in itself be a fair share of work. :)

    And of course - get well soon, Ernest! It's great to hear from you.

    I'm currently experimenting with Seppo for my website, which is... not ready yet. So maybe not the greatest suggestion. But development is happening fast, and I like it for a couple of reasons.

    1. It's incredibly easy to install. Just upload a file, set permissions, and open it in the browser. I'm somewhat incompetent, so I appreciate that even though deploying WordPress is obviously not very difficult either.
    2. Content is stored in basic XML files, making it easy to access with just basic PHP and an XSLT stylesheet. Basically it easy to incorporate posts into your site however you want it.
    3. It federates with ActivityPub, so people can follow your blog directly and get the content directly into their feeds.
    4. It's lightweight - very little bullshit.

    Basic functionality such as editing and deleting posts does not work yet, so it's absolutely not ready for primetime. But it's a project worth following, especially for those of us with an interest in the social web.

    Edit: I guess this would be more if you wanted to create a basic website yourself, and add a tool for content management to it. I read the post a bit too quickly - if you're not interested in writing some code there are much better options to go for out there. Seppo I think is nice for those who actively want to tinker a bit. :)

    You cannot view microblog posts from Lemmy, so the only way you'll see anything from Threads is if a user from there responds to content posted to Lemmy or similar sites. Possibly also if they choose to tag a community in their post, but that seems unlikely for anything else than testing purposes.

    Same as Mastodon users, really.
