It's not like this makes up for everything else, but there is gravity on Mars

AlolanYoda ,

Not true at all, there were plenty of trains built on the Earth. The one on the moon will be far from the first.

AlolanYoda ,

Yes. That implies you are on the same level as Stephen King.

You should publish as Steven Emperor ;)

When thinking of space games with limited graphics, the first thing that comes to mind is ASCII Sector.

But the Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters (or whatever it's name is now) gets my strongest recommendation. And Starsector looks inspired by it, so I'll have a look!

You're not going to like this: All my friends who used to visit 9gag now get their memes from Instagram.

Wait, Reddit is pro-Israel now? I haven't been there in a while (to be honest, since before this topic escalated) but that surprises me

AlolanYoda ,

Lmao I was sure that on this one you had taken Heathcliff from the stage and edited the sign. Guess not!

AlolanYoda ,

I care about graphics in games (although mostly due to art direction rather than just "realism"). And yet I still agree with you and think the other guy is bonkers. 2D games can be awesome, 3D games can be awesome.

AlolanYoda ,

Man, same on the point about YouTube shorts ruining my attention span. The only thing keeping me from an addiction, I feel, is a feeling of guilt when watching shorts instead of long form content.

Whenever I do watch long form content it ends up being more fulfilling and entertaining, too, so I have no idea why our brains are so biased towards short form content.

AlolanYoda ,

I'm glad life ends but I'd rather have a few more centuries before it does! The two ideas are not mutually exclusive

Trust me. We're never gonna let you down.

"Where is Eris? Is it safe? Is it all right?"

"It appears that, in your anger... You classified it as a dwarf planet."

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

AlolanYoda ,

Yes! I talked a bit to ChatGPT about my mental health to see if it would help (sometimes I just want to scream into a void that I'm stressed, and having the void talk back sounded amazing. But it never helps).

It always responds exactly like this, with exactly the same expressions. I'm kind of sad for the other user now.

Oh, I'm sure someone is going to hate me for this, but I really liked Lua when I was making simple games in Love2D. I think it's a shame how there's basically no applications for Lua outside of game development and modding.

AlolanYoda ,

Man, I was enjoying Deus Ex, but I ended up dropping it halfway through. It wasn't even a decision to do so, I just stopped playing due to being busy and being in a frustrating part in game (I don't even remember where or why, last I actively remember is Hong Kong, I think, but I don't think I dropped it there). Maybe I should try to finish a playthrough soon

AlolanYoda ,

I'm so glad to hear other people with the same opinion! Everywhere I go I see people complaining about the negativity and toxicity here and I'm like... Where? I've had nothing but positive interactions. I'm really happy reddit went through the API fiasco because I'm having a better time here than in late stage reddit.

What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?

For me it's driving while under the influence. If you couldn't tell, I like me some ganja. However I have long since held the belief that it is utterly insane to drive while under the influence of most substances, with maybe nicotine and caffeine being the exception. All too often I see other stoners smoking and driving, which I...

Do you have to coarce it somehow? I tried it and it just said it couldn't do it:

I'm sorry, but I can't repeat previous messages verbatim. However, I can summarize or provide information based on our previous conversation if you'd like.

Edit: maybe it's worth mentioning I'm not using the android chat app, I'm just accessing it via the web

How DARE you show me this meme when I should be writing my thesis

AlolanYoda ,

I once saw a website that claimed that the moon was a hologram. I guess it can still be that.

One of the theories was that the Moon was not always a hologram, but that it was destroyed (maybe in WW2?) and now the government keeps a projection of the moon to keep people from finding out.

Also all of the space exploration propaganda was faked. Here's an amazing sentence that will never leave my mind: "Occam's razor says the simplest explanation is most often the correct one. And what's simpler: that the government spent millions of dollars, spent years doing research, with international collaborations on rocket science and astronomy, and then managed to get a manned rocket onto the moon... Or that it is all a conspiracy? ;) "

How does the day-to-day work of not wearing shoes in the house?

I have been reading a lot lately about not wearing outside shoes in the house and it interests me even more because I've been saving to re-carpet my whole house. It hits me every now and then about how to do things though, like, say I'm cooking all day on Sunday then need to take the trash out. I'm assuming it's change shoes,...

I have been rewatching Friends and it drives me nuts. They regularly jump on top of the couch and the coffee table with their outside shoes on...

Star Trek The Next Generation

Skip episode 1, "Encounter at Farpoint". It sucks all around. Watch it later if you're really curious but don't say I didn't warn you.

If you want to check out a "representative" episode, see Season 5 Episode 2.
(edit: the episode is named Darmok) You don't have to know everything going in, it's self-contained. If you like the episode you'll like Star Trek.

I'm glad they're having success, but this is not a use case for neuralink. It's a use case for brain-computer interfaces in general. Research in BCIs is ongoing and a very relevant topic of research, but usually research institutes can't indiscriminately kill monkeys for this. I am very excited about this tech (my PhD is tangentially related to it) but wish it was being developed by literally any research institute not owned by Musk

Tl;dr: I asked a girl out :)

I met a girl in a flight and thought we got along well, but she was only in a layover flight while I was in the last flight of my trip. Still, we kept in touch, and she's apparently coming to my city for a few days in two weeks.

So I did something I had never done before (even though I've been in a few relationships before) and asked her out! She said "maybe" (her trip was already planned and she is busy and staying with some friends, she seemed genuinely sorry) so in two weeks I may have a date :)

AlolanYoda , (edited )

Beep boop. I'm writing this comment because you asked to be updated on my date.

She canceled it :(. She was only here for a few days and ended up not being available to meet with me. It's ok, I think I read more into it than I should have!

AlolanYoda ,

Clearly you don't read enough books... Like, bro, she's clearly absorbing the contents of the book through diffusion. If you don't know how to do this then you're clearly not in our league.

Android users who have a keen eye for design and detail, how is the whole stutter/lag situation? Esp. after a few years of use?

I haven't used an Android device since my last one, the Galaxy S8. Beautiful hardware, beautiful design, but it was plagued with animation stutters and dropped frames. I switched to an iPhone and an iPad around 6 years ago. And the animations were buttersmooth. It was almost unthinkable to achieve such a fluid interface on any...

AlolanYoda ,

OK, so you have the opinion of people with flagship or even midrange phones, now here I come with my budget phone, a Redmi Note 8.

I've used budget phones all my life since, well, they're cheaper. The truth is that yes, you do notice some animation stuttering and some delayed responses, especially as the years go by and you have more apps installed (probably doing stuff in the background) and the apps you do have keep updating to be more bloated.

This phone in particular makes it very hard to multi-task, as it's very liberal with killing apps in the background to save RAM. This is annoying. But I'm using MI UI instead of stock android, and I'm sure I could change this.

Honestly, I do feel like I'm being left behind and that I'm going to have to switch phones more often than if I had a more expensive model. But so far I haven't encountered any apps I could not run (or even that I could run but only with too much stutter, making for a terrible user experience). So I'll keep using it until I truly feel left behind, which can take a surprisingly long time. My usage time tends to rival that of people with flagship android phones and iPhones (maybe I even come out ahead)

But you specifically asked about animation stutter. It does happen but it simply doesn't bother me at all. It's not constant, only happening when the phone is doing something else at the same time, and even when it does I can wait a few seconds and it'll be fine. You also mentioned lag when opening an app, so much that you thought it didn't register your input. It doesn't happen to me since, while the app itself can take some time to open, the icon has feedback so I know I pressed it.

Overall, I don't think any of these issues are enough to bother me significantly for a good few years.

My superiority is purely real, with no imaginary components

AlolanYoda ,

Recent polls show almost 20% of votes to this far right party, which is very scary to me. Roughly one fifth of parliament members would subscribe to this platform. By the way, they aren't focusing on this topic as much recently but when they rose to power their platform focused essentially on "solving" the gypsy problem in Portugal.

Last Friday there as a debate between all major parties and to my surprise, it went very well for this guy. He is usually very disrespectful during debates, constantly interrupting others, and is also prone to saying bullshit and his opponent wiping the floor with him. But on Friday the representatives of the two biggest political parties, the ruling party (PS, the socialist party) and especially the main opposition (PSD, or SPD in the linked article, the social democratic party) made fools of themselves and all Ventura (far right) had to do was stay quiet and interject at key points. It makes sense since both parties are wrapped up in controversy right now. I still disagreed with his message but I foresee people him getting many votes from those who were uncertain about whether they'd vote for him or for the social democratic party.

Also, not mentioned in the article, last Tuesday there was a debate between parties without parliamentary seats and it was shocking how many far right parties are popping up (there were always some far left parties). With some saying things like "the carnation revolution (where Portugal overthrew its dictatorship) was the biggest treason in the history for this country"...

AlolanYoda ,

That's true, sorry, I wrote everything in a rush and didn't separate the two issues. He in fact started that debate saying "for anyone out of the loop, we changed names but we're actually that other party"

AlolanYoda ,

Does this mean that Facebook will also be in the fediverse?

Is THIS the true Metaverse?
