It seems like for lot of countries, oil is a poison pill. The entire economy as at the whim of a single market, and there's very little room for a middle class. There's just the wealthy who own the oil and the poor who have nothing.

South Sudan started as a beautiful dream, but without responsible leadership and developing a more diverse economy, that dream may be lost.

The lawsuit, first filed in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Indiana, alleges that Senate Bill 480 violates the U.S. Constitution on multiple fronts, including the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In addition, the lawsuit claims that the law violates the federal requirements of the Medicaid Act and the Affordable Care Act, because it prohibits essential medical services that would otherwise be authorized and reimbursed by Medicaid

Macron refuses to rule out putting troops on ground in Ukraine in call to galvanise Europe ( www.theguardian.com )

Palestinian prime minister submits government’s resignation, a move that could open door to reforms ( apnews.com )

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Palestinian prime minister announced the resignation of his government on Monday, paving the way for a shake-up in the Palestinian Authority, which the U.S. hopes will eventually take on a role in postwar Gaza....

Calling PBS and AP - two of the most highly regarded news sources - “blatent propaganda” says more about this comment than the article.

You linked the Wikipedia article:

The Houthi movement is a Shia Islamist political and military organization that emerged from Yemen in the 1990s.

In 2003, influenced by the Lebanese Shia political and military organization Hezbollah, the Houthis adopted their official slogan against the United States, Israel, and the Jews.

In late 2014, the Houthis repaired their relationship with [former president Ali Abdullah] Saleh, and with his help they took control of the capital city. The takeover prompted a Saudi-led military intervention to restore the internationally recognized government, leading to an ongoing civil war

As far as I know, even their allies Iran and North Korea don't recognize them as the legitimate government of Yemen. I'm not sure where you got your information, but I believe perhaps you misread or misunderstood something that you read.

But since it is a deliberate environmental catastrophe, some of the loudest voices will hail it as a triumph of resistance against colonist empire. Smh

There's a little old lady near where I used to live who drives up and down the country roads in her government-provided electric wheelchair every day. Everyone knows her.

On the one hand I think, "you go, girl!" but on the other hand, I feel like her life would be a lot easier if this town were more walkable/bikeable. She can't walk to ride a bike but what a great benefit it would be for her to live in a place like that.

Yes. If you do a search on this site for posts about google, you'll find multiple threads about this. Basically it seems that google is losing the arms race against SEO, and new LLM bots are mostly responsible.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, there's a great article I read a while back about how and why recipe web sites became so bad and frustrating. Basically, a good website would show you the recipe, you would read it and leave. However, since you didn't spend much time on the site, google would rank it much lower.

On the other hand, if you encountered a long rambling story that you had to read through and scroll through ads, before getting to the useful information, then google would rank the site higher because you spent more time on it. That's why there are so many memes about how bad recipe website are.

And of course, even before LLMs, it was trivial to implement a copy paste bot to create a massive number of web sites.

Starting from zero

I'm interested in exploring the world of self hosting, but most of the information that I find is incredibly detailed and specific, such as what type of CPU performs better, etc. What I'm really looking for is an extremely basic square 1 guide. I know basically nothing about networking, I don't really know any coding, but it...

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

That's a recommendation that I've seen a couple of times, and it looks promising. However I haven't found any guide that really explains how to do it step by step, or what factors I should consider, or even really what I need to be able to do it. Do you know if there is such a guide for someone who really isn't a "computer guy?"

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

A: I found what looks like a pretty good guide here https://piped.video/watch?v=xBIowQ0WaR8

It covers setting up a virtual server on AWS, as well as Setting up a Linux server with Docker and FileCloud or Netxcloud. It discusses some of the pros and cons of each. The only coding involved here is some copying and pasting json files, which is pretty beginner friendly if you ask me.

What you you folks here think? Is this a reasonable guide? Do you see any red flags or major oversights that beginner should know?

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@fuck_cars

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Those are some if the examples I expected to see higher of course!

It's not that easy for me to imagine a city with enough hospitals and universities that no one lives more than a 15 minute walk away. But I can certainly imagine if that included emergency clinics and libraries/colleges.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but when the users and mods who built the site do it, it's petty and selfish. When the ceo does it, it's brilliant, compounds user value, and improves the security of the user experience. /s

This is exactly why we should be encouraging local libraries, universities, law enforcement, city, and county governments how to set up Mastodon servers.

On the one hand, when you have a duty to inform the public, it no longer makes sense to suffer at the whims of tech billionaires. There was a time, for a decade or two, when these sites prioritized access and predictability, but no more. When you have information that you need to have accessible, the only guarantee is to control it yourself. They can still use corporate social media to get the message out to their network, but link it back to their mastodon account. Roll it into their IT departments just like their email server.

On the other hand, it's a critical step for the success of the fediverse. Universal email adoption came about because it was used by government and universities. What you could call the original social network is still an open protocol, it's not owned by any single corporation or government, and still the primary form of communication online. About 2 billion emails have been sent since you started reading this.
