Does anyone else ever just realize that you're not even sure why you want a relationship at all?

As I've gained more and more close friends, more than I've ever had in my life, and some closer than I've ever had in my life, I've come to realize something recently. Despite the prevailing feeling like I want a relationship, I don't actually know why it is I want one, nor what I have to gain from one....

Well yeah, but mostly due to lacking any chance and I'm a shut-in (who probably has SzPD). Also time has already made a fool of me.

I want to use Raylib, but mentioning it here on the fediverse doesn't get much of a response (I can't see a raylib community from my instance). My choice of language probably doesn't help, though.

My first issue is wanting vertex colors on 3D models and I am not getting this (this may be a problem with the bindings I'm using, naylib(nim-lang)). The second would be needing guidance for the 2D polygon text loader that I started.

Maybe I could make simple GUI applications with raygui, but I don't currently really have many viable ideas on what I would want to make.

To OP: Another potential option is using Godot w/bindings. Design is pretty fast and flexible, then using signals is super easy.

I've tested some frameworks (specific to my language, so not really helpful to most), the one that I liked more said it was declarative user interface framework based on GTK though I would prefer a similar thing for Qt and there wasn't an ability to automatically scale text size to better fill the available button size (I was testing an adventure-book reader and hoping to use unicode characters).

Frameworks for single page applications (or some other browser-based tech) might be ok for simple stuff. Similarly, I've liked the idea of TUI frameworks (yeah, because htop) but haven't really tried that yet.

And don’t confuse high budget indie studios with AAA game developers

On the other hand, there are a lot of publishers out there who really shouldn't have things called indie when they're involved.

The ones who have struck gold (perhaps multiple times) and are already worth multiple millions, publicly traded or even owned largely by investment firms. Some like this still footing everything on the players (crowdfunding and then early access) and on top of all of that going onto places like Imgur and Reddit and doing unpaid marketing there (doesn't seem great for the actual devs, and then there are things like multiple accounts/sockpuppets/deleting+reposting etc).

And even without the unpaid marketing stuff, a publisher has a lot of ways to screw over developers and/or players usually with the goal of money in some form.

@insomniac_lemon@kbin.social avatar

Are you challenging me?

For the most part, it's not hard to find them if they're doing the things I said and you pay attention while they do it. Look at how many titles a publisher has on Steam, see if they have a wikipedia page and if so if there's monetary info involved. Recognizing a dev/publisher might also be part of it.

Also with self-publishing never being easier, some of my skepticism starts there. Another is games seeming somewhat shovelware-esque or like they're trying to ride the wave of some other successful game/trend and that's why targeting consoles early-on is likely important to them for the money.

I originally wasn't, but off the top of my head some of the stronger examples:

Just because something is cute pixels that does not mean it's indie. A good introduction to this is the existing discussion of Dave the Diver and its ties to Nexon. EDIT: Also, lootbox controversy with Nexon and Maplestory

One involving unpaid marketing and crowdfunding/early-access: tinyBuild. ~$473m IPO. Publisher of Hello Neighbor, which also has some controversy around it on quality (also mobile games with micro-transactions, because kid audience). While searching on this, I also saw someone angry about them doing testing on Steam and then a post-launch Epic exclusivity. EDIT: Also one of their games not having all content available on GOG.

The game Roots of Pacha had a license dispute (I do not know the cause, but the dev did end up getting the Steam rights) their original publisher had at least 6 different accounts on Imgur (and they also did the crowdfunding/EA thing too, and no it was not like 1 game per account either and some of those accounts are mysteriously gone now). Same publisher was in the news about controversy over boob physics, and I don't doubt it was either suggested by the CEO for the headlines or just marketing clicks if controversy hadn't have happened.

Even if people don't care about stuff like this enough to stop buying the games, I hope they at least try to not enable or reward blatant self-promotion (particularly the more dipping and questionable practices involved) on the fediverse

My napkin guess is that this is some sort of specific process/tactic, either it only allows 1 2 levels of reclassification at a time or that was all that could be agreed on (with multiple agencies, likely the DEA limiting the pace). So either avoiding the Senate or the tiniest of steps that pretty much anybody will allow/defend. Slow-and-steady could be the plan, assuming Biden wins again and actually follows up.

Well that and it probably really helps with the turning-a-blind-eye, like the difference between ignoring/acquitting a hit-and-run fender-bender versus ignoring/acquitting the act of treating a no-traffic intersection (in clear conditions) like a 4-way stop. Maybe it will be enough to reduce hostility and move the relevant overton window over time while avoiding pushback.

EDIT: Looking at it more, this seems to be the department of HHS pressuring the DEA on clear medical use. As others say, the lower restriction might help further medical study which could in-turn result in further reclassification.

If potential is key, I say keep the context of the MAID process but instead of outright death make it cryonics. Plus other potential relevant volunteer stuff and organ donation stuff lined up. Even if the initial cryonics technique is not even close to viable, other stuff could be transformative. If cryonics has any chance to work, things will get appreciably better in 300-or-so years right?

Hopeful worst is my brain in a jar mostly playing VR and sometimes knitting yarn via robotic arms. Lots of ways it could be better. Also unlike traditional cyborg stuff with all-machine life-support, I would like to still have a complex microbiome if not taking it further with symbiosis.

Reminder on Stockholm syndrome:

According to accounts by Kristin Enmark (one of the hostages): the police were acting incompetently, with little care for the hostages' safety.

She had criticized the police for pointing guns at the convicts while the hostages were in the line of fire, and she had told news outlets that one of the captors tried to protect the hostages from being caught in the crossfire

but the prime minister [Palme] told her that she would have to content herself with dying at her post rather than Palme giving in to the captors' demands.

Ultimately, Enmark explained she was more afraid of the police, whose attitude seemed to be a much larger, direct threat to her life than the robbers.

Which could possibly be relevant here, particularly the civil war part.

Then again, I do see that the incentives for Kei cars were reduced in 2014 and I wouldn't doubt if oversized trucks/SUVs were gaining popularity there too (I did see 1 headline about it).

Yeah, my ebike (45lbs) isn't that hard to ride when powered off (and I am not the most in-shape). Reading the article, I also wonder if a bike could just be... turned back on (it's a thumb-accessible button, not a pull-start) if they are aware of this tech. It also seems likely there could be other ways to defeat this (like the bit about being line-of-sight).

Also it would almost be funny if criminals just rode an aerobike or something instead or perhaps even an ebike with all of the electronic bits stripped out (which would also lower the weight), I say almost because it would make this dumb backpack toy fully useless but then I imagine it causing other issues (like pacemakers) if they just keep blasting it out trying to get it to work.

I'm pretty sure that's just about using the pedals, as in having an ebike with a throttle won't be an issue (even though throttles are extremely common, mine is 250w + EU speed limit and has a half-twist throttle).

Not that the legislation is 100% unrelated, but I see it likely more of just accepting that people have been going faster for a while.

My thought as well, the video Tom Scott did on the mountain town that has bespoke electric vehicles (and strict usage on them for needed business) comes to mind (R2oD1ZHNMFE). I don't know how much is law and how much is companies not caring to cater to that market (even with designs that they sell in Europe), but Kei-like vehicles can still be affordable without being fully unsafe (but the issue of safety is more about the market making larger-and-larger trucks and SUVs, and lack of viable car alternatives paired with high speed limits).

Higher cost really is not a fix. Other concerns like privacy seem like policy could mesh well with low-end (no internet connection, just-a-radio, common off-the-shelf parts, standards+no DRM etc). It would be nice for the option to exist in this space that US car companies are not trying to fill anyway.

I don't mind the idea, I'm in the US but I've got a 250w ebike w/the EU speed limit* just because it was cheaper... plus faster is less efficient and human power means I get less blob-like so it's a win-win.

Then again, it does have a twist throttle and I use this most often to slowly approach** or accelerate out of a stop sign (esp. crossing a road). Sometimes I've used it so I didn't need to pedal in the sun (I cannot really sweat). I've needed to use it twice when my chain fell off and I didn't have gloves with me. But generally my legs are contributing something... I wouldn't mind some sort of different throttle programming, but really I don't think my bike is one that is an issue at all w/throttle and throttle programming definitely wouldn't cover all of these scenarios.

Another thing is if I come to a stop and have forgotten to change gears, throttle is a save there too thanks to it not using the chain for its gearing. Or it can just mean less gear-changing in general.

*= 25 km/h (~15mph). I have not changed it, plus my bike (with me riding it at least) is not even quickly hitting this speed, most of the time I was going ~10mph. To hit motor cutoff speed on flat ground I'd probably need to be be in highest gear+PAS and be really putting a lot of effort in (including leaning down for less drag, I normally ride in a relaxed position).

@pbpza I vaguely align with this, but don't really have much capability or hope now. Even having difficulties furthering my (admittedly niche) interests here on the fediverse (federation problems, not many comments).

I am not quite sure what makes this a co-op and not some other community, conservancy, union, club/meetup etc. if it's remote?

Sidenote, not much in the way of actual projects but you'll see me in db0's project (closed PRs 1-3, 2 bits of character art w/animation). I am interested in polygonal art (both 2D and 3D) but have not found a good workflow for me. I would probably rather work solo (if I can do anything) and for programming I want to use nim-lang which limits my options. Might want to use Raylib, but 3D vertex colors was the last thing I tried and those didn't work for me (I could maybe do a simpler 2D polygon style, I have a format/loader started but it needs a lot more work with implementation to be viable). 2/3 of my threads showing my simple 3D art are visible on your instance.

I have life issues too, a change of living conditions would be nice but I don't know if I could pull my own weight plus I am just not really a sociable person. I am once again saying: Why not hydroxyapitite? A form of calcium, same as our teeth/bones. It even has water management uses because it adsorbs other stuff like fluoride and lead, which actually makes finding info about its addition to water for the purpose of teeth health difficult.

Though it seems like hydroxyapatite water would also make fluoride toothpaste even more effective.

The mineral ions introduced during remineralisation restore the structure of the hydroxyapatite crystals. If fluoride ions are present during the remineralisation, through water fluoridation or the use of fluoride-containing toothpaste, the stronger and more acid-resistant fluorapatite crystals are formed instead of the hydroxyapatite crystals.

    insomniac_lemon , (edited )
    @insomniac_lemon@kbin.social avatar

I’ve heard fluoride builds up in your bones so it’s one of those negative health effects that’s hard to study

I mentioned it in a top-level comment, but there is hydroxyapatite that would likely be a better water additive (and increases effectiveness of fluoride toothpaste) and would probably also be good for bone health rather than a potential long-term risk.

Couldn't hard water be described an issue of natural minerals being "not water soluble"? It's still going to be floating in the water, and I assume that hard water is a problem of excess and thus could be managed better. Maybe even the nano form, assuming that passes the safety checks (and guidelines for safe/effective concentrations can be established).

I have cynicism for lots of things involved here, but if I had the option from some shady person who seems like they are capable and vaguely aligned with me I'd probably take the chance especially if we could make some sort of a post-revival agreement. What a brain (put into a small machine and ideally alongside symbiotic systems) can do for the people who are still alive. Probably with my brain in a jar living in VR until the details are worked out.

Even then I see a lot of problems, and at least 3 of them are cost. I could maybe see a step down (more of a slowfall type thing negating body weight and using jumping) but even then I don't see that working well where all the land is owned (also: wires, momentum), and electric paragliding might be the more realistic today option (that probably isn't all that practical either).

Sticking to the ground just makes more sense, heck for the brief moment when I had my legs not-fully-out-of-shape from riding my geared 250w ebike regularly (and after recovering from a 22 mile trip) I was wondering if a motor is even (fully) needed (assuming I could get a tri-fold knockoff or used minivelo for cheap for less weight... and possibly slightly smaller though my ebike is already 20" wheels thus a similar size category). Long enough to accept it. Lots of reasons that ultimately add up to being an inadequate person, but also no transportation/income in a semi-rural area (also health/personality issues) so I'm a shut-in and thus don't ever meet people. I also could see it being a genuine population crisis if it weren't even more strict/bureaucracy-hell than MAiD.

Then of course, there will always be more people pushing back against programs like this than there ever will be for actually improving living conditions. People just don't want to see or hear any reference to death, continued suffering is a lot more indirect and nebulous and thus ignorable.

In my house we have slightly oversized trashbags, have the bag oriented the other way (so when you pull the bag out it does not get stuck*), make sure the drawstring is over the lip, and this depends on the design of your trash-can but just see the picture. Image link for non-Kbin.

*= this is specific to a larger bag in a tapered container. If the orientation matches closely, lifting causes it to expand at the bottom when you lift so you're only lifting the bag at first (also this allows it to get stuck when it's overfilled). Rotated the other way it cannot expand fully until it is out of the container.

I just checked, apparently we have a ~16 gallon can (15 7/8ths*) and use 33gal bags. It doesn't seem that much bigger (bc volume) but an overfilled bag will still have room in it when removed (it's useful for last-minute additions on garbage day).

I don't know if you need to go this far, but maybe it is why they still fit the can properly with the not-expected-fit orientation like I described to prevent overfilling. 30gal might work, I guess it seems there isn't much choice here though (otherwise I'd say try 5-10gal/~20% higher rather than double).

I cannot stress enough how much single-speed at 250w and this price is a deal-breaker. Even if it were a premium product it wouldn't make up for the lack of some sort of gear system (I'd say IGH because belt drive but I know that might conflict with the motor's use of the hub for its own gearing).

    insomniac_lemon ,
    @insomniac_lemon@kbin.social avatar

    Maybe I'm blind because
with all this price I don't see any gears.

Also because off-road tires, and only 250w. My 250w ebike is similar (even in weight!) but was way cheaper (both in terms of cost and build quality) and I couldn't imagine it being even half-as-viable with single-speed. The folding design of this sure looks better that mine, though.

Said before, when I had my leg muscles built up I had thought about getting a smaller/lighter non-e bike. Like some tri-fold clone or perhaps some used Minivelo.

I've only used Kbin, but it seems fairly decent as a commenter aside from some federation/stability/spam issues. I really like the idea of having access to the Mastodon side of things on top of the rest of the fediverse, even though it's hit-or-miss.

Thread wise, I suppose I haven't posted enough to be statistically solid though it seems like it's dead on the Kbin side of things and federation is even worse. I've thought about posting to lemmy.world (because 1 of my threads to a kbin community just got 2 LW commenters) but haven't made new content to do so.

You’re on Fire by They Might Be Giants

Oh damn, you must've got one of them
    Combustible heads
I read an article all about them

    You're on fire
    You're on fire

I know it's probably wrong, but the fire does seem to originate from the head region

Yeah, the only language I've seen/tried that actually feels right*.

But for me it falls down when it comes to needing other people and/or the specific engine-level stuff that I want to get started. I was hoping to start out simple with Raylib bindings, but even that I can't get vertex colors on imported models to work and I tinkered w/my own 2D polygon format but it was too much work for me to finalize.

My part of the fediverse doesn't seem to work well for asking niche questions at least, I don't see much talk on Nim and it doesn't help that it's hard to find when people don't say nim-lang. Also there are 2 replies to you that aren't federated to where I can see them (and my art threads--lowpoly+vertex colors, for instance plant--aren't federated to your instance).

*= That also may be a mix of my issues plus how some people style their code, though.
