All of the sudden? Have to say I wasn't expecting this but I'm glad it's happening.
It'll matter more what they do about it rather than what they say. Will they forbid the use of these chemicals in common products like waterproof clothing for example?
Regarding any corporation being made to pay - lol, I strongly believe that will never ever happen.
But I hope this will also motivate the EU to take action.

highduc ,

I also noticed that. Not sure what it means but I found it funny :D

highduc ,

I can see that making sense for Taiwan, but how could they use it in the US?

Most people would be afraid of pro Trump propaganda, right? But Trump is even more anti China than Biden is, so that doesn't even make sense.

highduc ,

But he's not just outwardly anti China, he is actually anti China - judging by actions not words! - the tariffs he imposed and the trade war he started.

highduc ,

It's obviously fake but also intentionally deceiving, no?
The lack of honesty is disappointing if you ask me.

highduc ,

Oh no they've been "slammed". That'll show 'em.

highduc ,

Afaik the charges were just a tool fabricated to be used against him.
He exposed US war crimes and therefore they made him an enemy of the state and want to make an example out of him, to show others that when going against the US you have no rights - they can torture you, imprison you forever, etc.

Biden's legal team went to Justice Dept. over what they viewed as unnecessary digs at his memory ( apnews.com )

President Joe Biden’s personal attorney said Sunday he went to both the special counsel and the attorney general to register concerns over what he viewed to be pejorative and unnecessary digs at the president’s memory....

highduc ,

Not only in the US, it's the same thing in lots of countries.
Choices are between solid shit and diarrhea. Vote! Lol.

highduc ,

Lol, I have to hand it to him, Trump is pretty funny when he comes up with shit like this. Really riles up his opposition.

highduc ,

Truly inspiring. This is what real leadership looks like!

highduc , (edited )

Bullshit warmongering propaganda.
edit: and let me guess, part of the solution would be buying very expensive, US made weapons.

edit 2 since I see it's a popular post: I also love how - like how immigrants are at the same time too lazy to work and living on social security, but also stealing all the jobs - Russia is at the same time too weak and pathetic to invade a country like Ukraine but also going to start a war with all of NATO, lol. 🤡

highduc ,

Big bad gulag is gonna get you bro. Run!

I enjoy the goulash! 🥘

highduc ,

Legislation to stop gambling for children when?

highduc ,

That is such a funny list, lol. Invade Mexico for example - so random. 🤣

The flying cars one ...what can one even say about that?! I mean at this point why not.

highduc ,

Wow! Wasn't expecting to see this guy here. And with a 7 year old video. He usually does audio stuff.

highduc ,

Or, you know, Israel is a genocidal terrorist state and it's been doing this sorta shit for decades.

highduc ,

I think people who dislike the headphone jack must be young and not have (good) wired headphones.
Older people (older than teenagers and young adults I mean) often have a few pairs of good headphones they got over the years, and it's a massive waste to just throw them away and buy wireless because that's what the trends demand. And in most cases wireless won't sound as good, because the budget needs to go to bluetooth chips, and dacs, and batteries and all that crap, instead of just focusing on audio.

According to Wikipedia, 'The original 1⁄4 inch (6.35 mm) version descends from as early as 1877', and it's been an industry standard since then.
You can use it not just for headphones but as a line out, to connect all kinds of audio devices between them. You can hook up your phone to a car audio system, an old radio (if it has input, I think most do), a guitar pedal or an amplifier, a reverb or an effects unit, etc., just with the "magic" of wires.

highduc ,

You're correct. But you can use an adapter. Some headphones (especially more expensive ones) come with their own. And some devices (like my USB audio interface) come with a big jack for headphones, but again an adapter makes it irrelevant whether it's a small jack or a large one.

highduc ,

We're not talking about the same thing here. First off a large jack to small jack adapter would be needed in rare circumstances, if you happen to use a pair of headphones that only uses a large jack with a small device like a phone, which obviously only has a small one.
That whole large jack discussion was started because of the quote from Wikipedia I posted, where they mention just how old the jack is. I'm guessing you haven't read the rest of the comments since you brought it up?

2nd of all a jack adapter is just "wire", it's passive ( doesn't have any circuitry), and doesn't require any support.
For a dongle type of adapter that's quite different. Software and hardware and compatibility come into play.
Lots of dongles have a DAC built into them which is separate from the phone DAC. It's duplicating something you already have, and if your phone has a good one buit into it (which it should), the flimsy dongle most probably has a very cheap one.
I have a dongle and it only works if I plug it in before taking calls. If I already answer and then use the dongle the sound won't work out of the headphones so it's useless...

Jellyfin Volume Normalization

I’ve poked around online and it seems like Jellyfin had (music) volume normalization added to it sometime recently. However, I’m struggling to verify that it’s enabled/working. Is it something I have to enable or is it on by default? If it’s on shouldn’t I be able to see something like a LUFS or ReplyGain value in each...

highduc ,

I’d love normalization. Hope it works for movies where explosions are 10x louder than the dialogue.

highduc ,

Ty for the tip! I only did a brief test but it seems to be working well.

highduc ,

This happened to me once, shortly after joining lemmy. I even took a screenshot as proof :) Glad somebody else can confirm it’s actually a thing.

highduc ,

Is that the right link? Ublock is warning me it might be malicious.

highduc ,

The trade war US and EU are pushing for seems like a stupid attempt to stop China from developing.
It’s very petty of them because they can’t compete fairly and have to resort to such BS, and I don’t think it’s going to work.

highduc ,

I was talking about trade restrictions they put on chips, EVs, etc., not the defense industry.

highduc ,

Took BBC a long while to aknowledge this.

highduc ,

I wonder if they couldn’t focus on other domestic industries instead? More lucrative ones. DW say 59,000 tons of clothes end up being thrown in the desert so it doesn’t seem like there’s a need to create even more clothes.

highduc ,

Can’t believe it. And so “sudden” - though not really, they did give months of warning in advance, but I still wasn’t expecting it. My account is from October 2008 :)

It’s not a perfect tracker. Even this week I was mildly frustrated with a torrent that wasn’t seeded much, but it was good enough for me not to bother with many accounts anywhere else.

Don’t know where to go on next. Please leave suggestions if you know anybody taking in refugees :)

highduc ,

Thanks for the suggestion. I already have an account there and use it from time to time, but I’m considering joining 1 or 2 more trackers if possible, just to have as backup.

highduc ,

If you’re considering buying one you might want to take into account that they removed the headphone jack so they can sell their own wireless buds and headphones.

highduc ,

Yeah I think so too

highduc ,

Love Bill Burr. Hope it’s gonna be good.

highduc ,

Interesting so it’s like a onewheel but better and supporting right to repair?!
Can’t help but think you could get a nice bicycle for less than that, and it would be more practical though.

highduc ,

I think it’s monthly, otherwise it’s just a regular ticket, no?

highduc ,

Loved this show. Should rewatch it acutally, don’t remember much of it.

highduc ,

Not sure if joking or…? If you’re joking it went over my head :)

highduc ,

The fact that they don’t include a headphone jack that’s been an audio standard for decades makes their claims of sustainability seem like marketing bs. And the argument that it’s to make the phones thinner is bs too, since most phones now are bricks compared to previous generations. It was all a ruse to sell crappy bluetooth headphones with recharcghable batteries that are going to wind up in a landfill.

highduc ,

Yes, because it doesn’t just “lack” it. They deliberately chose not to include such a simple thing so they can sell more shitty wireless headphones. I already have good wired ones, so no thank you. And I find this extremely anti-consumer and anti-sustainability.

highduc ,

Yes how convenient. They opt out of a port worth cents but luckily they sell hundred dollars headphones with batteries in them. I already have wired pairs and don’t need any more.

highduc ,

At first I read that domain name as “I u search linux” and I was very confused.

highduc ,

This “weekly thread” is 1 month old btw. Could we have a weekly one?
Edit: to add something relevant to the conversation I just finished watching Miracle Workers. It’s a comedy with Steve Buscemi and Daniel Radcliffe and it’s kind of absurd, more like something the actors did to entertain themselves. It’s ok but not amazing. Also watched Afterparty. 1st season was OK but the 2nd one was to cliche and cringe to continue.

highduc ,

I have a small Ugreen I bought a few years ago and while I’m not using it anymore it did its job well while I needed it and afaik it still works well. Initially I got it for the detachable usb-c cable.

And I think it’s authentically Chinese, doesn’t pretend to be a German company or anything like that.
