US Democrats could have done this a decade ago. They could have codified abortion rights. They could have made so many things a priority: they choose not to. I owe nothing to a failed approach to politics.
I must correct you there. There is a theory that says that politics has to fulfill the will of its average voter. It can not lean further left than that. Otherwise it looses voters on the righter side.
Its interesting that when its a step in the authoritarian or right-wing direction, its always possible. When its a step towards humanism or the left, its never possible or only ever an epsilon of progress.
Why do you think that is?
Because people are, in fact, pretty right-wing authoritarian.
The idea that voters exist along a symmetrical distribution is the mistake you are making. People are not randomly coming up with their beliefs and there is no reason you should assume it would follow a gaussian.
I never said that it was a symmetrical or normal distribution. I am well aware that it is not. But it is still a distribution.
And people do come up with their own beliefs. It's not as if you can just tell them what to believe. People's will comes first, parties and their ideas come second.
I have seen everything by now: People who think that only sociopaths have an inner monologue. People who think an inner monologue would be useful, but can't quite lean in on the concept. People who are confused that some people don't have an inner monologue. People getting angry at me for even "questioning" the inner monologue, as if it was holy.
The brain structures develop to help us navigate through the environment. So of course, at times where an inner monologue is helpful, we will probably have one.
I think that we have a perception bias towards things that interest us.
Since the elements in the top-right corner (C, O, N, P, S, Si, Fe, Al, Na, ...) are interesting to us, that's what we typically look at. And in that region, things are fairly balanced. It's only in the regions where we don't typically look, where we said "let's just make it all metal so the categorization is done, call it a day, and move on". I think.
Very much inspired by the recent post about what anti work actually means. If you were free from the “work or starve” paradigm, what would you do with your time? No wrong answers....
I very much suspect we will never have to work "zero hours a week", but 20 hrs/week seems just doable. So there would still be work to do. The rest of the time will be for recreational purposes. Like, connecting to other people, and stuff.

One of my most hated things in the dying days of Reddit is people having to put the /s because of all the mass down voting from users that didn't get a post was a joke....
For every completely unhinged and stupid statement, there surely is someone who believes it.
Now, you see, if we didn't put /s behind these posts, it would be impossible to tell whether we're joking, or whether whoever writes the comment is actually that stupid. That's just how it is on the internet.
The fertility rate in the United States has been trending down for decades, and a new report shows that another drop in births in 2023 brought the rate down to the lowest it’s been in more than a century....
That's bullshit I believe, because if more babies are born, sure there are more babysitters, but again, more babies. So it will even out and make no difference.
I honestly started out not liking systemd at all, mostly due to the reports that it did waaay to much, but nowadays, I like the concept.
It is basically officially moving daemon management from a script-based approach to a table/database-based approach. That improves static analyzability, therefore increasing clarity, and probably even performance.
I agree that we should abandon scripts and move towards declarative software management, and abandoning sudo for a more declarative system seems like a good step to me.
I'm mostly worried about the huge area consumption, tbh? Like, if you would replace all fossil oil with biodiesel, how much agricultural area would you need? Probably more than we have, I'd have to look it up, but it's a lot for sure.
I don't think so. I think we start being addicted when we have some serious trouble that we can't deal with, and stop when that trouble is gone. Happened many times that way.
For what i heard, a lot of people on the Linux community use Krita for image manipulation, even though, it's intended for digital painting, and GIMP is the one intended for image manipulation, because people don't like the GIMP's UI....
I expect that GIMP internally has a list of all objects that I added to the file. Like, text, brush drawings, pasted images. Instead, I cannot find that list anywhere.
