Probably being unable to buy music when I was in my teens.

No job, no income, no way to get to the store anyway, and to top it off… half the music I liked I wouldn’t have been able to find anyways. (Fan somgs/parodies)

So I learned that (free) YouTube downloaders and MP3 converters existed.

A bit later than that… NES/SNES games I wanted to play but those consoles were before my time. So I learned emulators existed.

So basically stuff I didn’t have access to otherwise.

There are too many damn love songs. 75% of all music does not need to be about love, relationships, and breakups. I stopped listening to radio because all the damn love songs got annoying.

Can we please have more songs about literally anything else. Weed, flowers, rainy days, animal companions, construction work, types of cars, card games, anything. There’s more in life to sing about than just relationships and/or the lack of them!

So far as I know, they’re not shoving 20 ads in your face on every screen.

I know they’re far from perfect. Heck they have a forced arbitration clause in their ToS.

But compared to other services lately, Discord seems to mostly be trying to treat users as customers instead of products for advertisers. I’ll take it, and get some neat conveniences from Discord in turn.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...

Vegans simply existing make people feel uncomfortable, so defense mechanisms in the brain trigger.

Since it’s an ethical stance, and people at least deep down know that killing innocent animals for 5 minutes of taste pleasure is wrong, but they don’t want to change themselves.

So the brain tries to rationalize how it’s definitely not wrong and really the vegan is wrong, and/or demonize the position to shield itself from the discomfort of knowing.

Basically psychological defenses kick in to defend unethical behavior that someone highlights by simply existing.

Can you live without YouTube ?

Today in a Privacy community a post about YouTube. No word about privacy but all about which software or settings are needed to watch videos and the money needed to host videos. It made me wonder whether some of you can lead a meaningful life without YouTube. Or will a cold turkey bring the worst out of you ?

I used to use Reddit every day. I just replaced Reddit time with Lemmy and YouTube.

If YouTube goes down… I’ll live. It’s not a life support thing like income or housing so I’ll just find other things to fill the hole.

Will it suck? Sure. Will I live? Yep. I’d prefer they put out a reasonably affordable subscription instead of just nuking themselves with ads and more enshittification, but it’s not like life itself depends on YouTube.

Their current subscription is too pricey. At least last I looked.

They can get some of my money if they put out a sufficiently lower priced option. I paid for Reddit premium and used none of the features I just liked the site before Steve Huffman decided to be super extra shitty. I’d do the same for YouTube.

Individual instances and frontends might have something to do with it. People saying they see a ton of NSFW and have to block so many communities, but at sh.itjust.works on Voyager I haven’t seen any of that.

It’s simultaneously open yet curated at the same time and that’s pretty neat!

Methane is both stronger than co2 and has the shorter half-life. We COULD swap to plant based diets on a mass scale to eliminate a huge portion of that.

It would also reduce land used for food farming (animals eat more than we get from eating them, and most are factory farmed and mass-produced fed monocrops to meet consumer demand), allowing us to rewild a lot of space.

That is in our power. Completely in OUR power. But nope. Blame corporations exclusively, take no personal action, bacon tho.

It’s weird and confusing to pluralize a sentence when you’re still talking about a singular individual. We should normalize “Why is they so cute?” If we refuse to make a new non-demeaning word for a singular.

I say non-demeaning because “Why is it so cute?” Is correct, but calling a living being “it” is objectifying.

I would pay if it were more a more affordable price.

I haven’t browsed apps in ages so idk if it’s still common, but I remember lots of apps having a lite version and a paid version. Lite version has ads and a sometimes couple less features. Full version ad-free and potential extra features.

I liked that. Let me decide if I enjoyed the app enough to pay for the better version.

Before Reddit went down in a fire, I paid premium even though I already had adblocker and no need for the premium features. And I would do the same for YouTube now, if it wasn’t so high priced.

I am consciously learning now what I think I subconsciously already knew. If I value something enough, pay for it. And I DO value YouTube’s videos. The current cost is just a bit uncomfortably steep for a monthly subscription fee.

That reminds me of a generational difference I heard about where when someone says “Thank you”, the older generation will say “you’re welcome”, seeing that they did something worth thanking. But the younger generation feels uncomfortable saying “you’re welcome” and says “no problem” instead, implying it was simply an expected thing for them to do.

I’m in the “no problem” generation. And yeah, saying “you’re welcome” really does just feel weird to me.

Humanity is screwed.

They like being alone, don’t like loud noises, will find a reason to leave a situation with more than 3 people in a small area. They don’t have any sexual desire and will be most happy to go through life without ever having intercourse. Probably going to go extinct without outside intervention thanks to that, better intervene to preserve the species.

They want to hibernate when it’s cold outside. Cold = anything below 70f.

They’re herbivores though so at least they don’t destroy their planet by mass farming the cruelest and most inefficient food source possible. Silver lining?

I left so many spaces when they got taken over by people who just wanted to collect labels without understanding what they meant, and instead just morphing labels to mean whatever they wanted.

Fun fact: Gas chambers are often used to kill pigs. You can hear their screaming from outside the facilities as the gas burns them to death from the inside out.

When I became financially independent I got Reddit premium even though I didn’t really use any of the features. Already had adblock and RES. I just wanted to support the site I spent hours on.

Cancelled that when they killed Apollo.

But I do agree that limited ads aren’t an issue… except for the slippery slope that’s happened. Just a few more ads… just a little more intrusive…

… Wait is anticheat on? I got a hacked client that automatically disabled my desire for partnered “fun time” so it made the grind to 30 with that status effect a lot easier.

It’s not people using the neutral that bothers me, it’s the fact that the neutral is both singular and plural while the non neutrals are only singular/plural.

and the plural part also alters the entire sentence structure to plural.

“He is over there” - Singular and easy to understand

“They is over there” - Just sounds wrong.

“They are over there” - Both singular and plural. Is it a person of unspecified nature or multiple people of mixed ones?

English could use a popularization of a strictly singular neutral that doesn’t carry implications of being an object rather than a being (“It is over there”)

I don’t know why you’re getting ads… I run Firefox + uBlock just fine.

But I also run NoScript and AdBlockPlus. Maybe try those?

(Yes I know NoScript with uBlock is pretty redundant. Doesn’t really bother me to allow scripts on both to unbreak things. I like the double lock.)

For what it’s worth, memes have helped me stay. I doubt I’m the only one.

They’re quick and easy to browse and some get a bunch of topical comments and links to other relevant communities.

It’ll take a while to reach a level that’s known in the public eye like Twitter and Reddit, but the low-hanging fruit helps keep people interested while more niche communities are forming.

If it’s a paid app then that makes me think quality to be honest. It’s probably misguided, but my default is to feel that if you need to pay up front for an app it’s going to be higher quality and not full of ads/microtransactions.

I’d argue you still can get that dopamine hit.

Even if the numbers don’t carry elsewhere in a meaningful way, seeing the high positive number next to your post still means that other people agreed with/liked what you said on that particular post/comment. And that alone can give a mild dopamine hit.

Less useful for bots trying to farm rep for nefarious reasons, more useful for real people who can feel the joy of a moment.
