The fediverse won’t succeed at putting up a substitute and that’s a problem?

Just an impression: All the pieces seem to be there. But what’s required is a team, with devs, PMs and coordinators, dedicated to making a particular place in the .

That’s resources and decently sized financial and organisational demands, especially to get a critical mass of users.

Is the fediverse up to that challenge? If not, is it an issue worth addressing?

IDK if we're really missing any software features, but I feel like it's a good opportunity for a Lemmy plugin

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I'm still most excited about the ongoing work on plugin support

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4695

would you say this belongs in the 0.20.0 milestone? or is it too soon?

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I think that's https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4623

which is part of the milestone for v0.19.5

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Especially with Lemmy getting support for plugins soon, I don't see the need for making a new platform

A new sorting method for "unanswered" is a cool idea. I'm not sure if it's quite as simple as just finding posts with 0 comments, because people can put additional questions in the comments but it's still unanswered. Also how do you sort them for posts with the same number of comments/answers. But this is definitely something that a plugin could handle.

I saw someone else suggested we could just put "[unanswered]" in the title and then edit the title to "[answered]"

Kings Quest 40th anniversary is today and we have a special video for you from the designer of the game Roberta Williams there are some amazing emotions and tidbits in here. I am sure you all will enjoy!!

Never seen a 35 minute video on Twitter before, but I didn't see a YouTube link for it.

Edit: found it on YouTube https://youtu.be/JNiqcSUrAOo?si=x4g06fan77dbL6rp

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

a pretty simple plugin idea would be a regex to validate post titles, deny the post if the title is invalid

I might try it unless someone else beats me to it

I guess to start with it could be a config file with a dictionary of community name: regex

and later it could be made to use the database with an api to set the regexes, could even allow community moderators to set their own regexes (might need a maximum regex length, maximum number of parenthesis/groups in the regex pattern, and disable lookbehind/lookahead, for performance reasons)

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Just saying it's an easy one to start with to get familiar with the system

And yeah it could be used to verify "tags" in the title, or require you put the year for something like a movie title or game, like (1993)

also my comment kicked off a little discussion in here, so that's nice too

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Or use Cloudflare (properly)

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Then they aren't using it properly

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Really awesome movie. I saw it twice in theaters, need to watch it again at home soon

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

awesome, I hope this can bring more devs on board

also I think we should organize behind a single GitHub tag, like

https://tl.net The old Team Liquid forums, still the best place to discuss StarCraft

And I guess if Reddit was ActivityPub that would be good too

Does Lemmy instance server software already allow for plugins or extensions

Issue tracking for plugins/extensions, if you click subscribe on the issue then you'll get email updates for it https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3562

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Wait how does a kart racing game have a half hour tutorial? Lol

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Boost can do this

Also I did suggest a tweak to the hot rank for comments, I do feel like Hot is ok for posts but not for comments

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4471

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

tl;dr: apps should login with the username die4ever@programming.dev similar to email, instead of choosing instance programming.dev and then typing in die4ever for username separately

yea that probably would be simpler, I'm sure some apps already do this

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

at this point I think we might need comments more than posts, there's lots of posts already but most of them are lacking comments

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I haven't seen this, I only browse Subscribed not All

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I think admins curating the feed is… Interesting but also kind of dangerous

just letting the admins set defaults would be better than forcing these choices upon their users, which I think is was the above user was suggesting, which is kinda what Reddit does with having default subs

The active sort still showing 2 days old posts is not ideal.

why not? if they're getting new comments then they're still active

Active (default): Calculates a rank based on the score [of the post] and time of the latest comment, with decay over time

it's like something inbetween Hot and classic forums-style sorting (New Comments sort in Lemmy)

but I do not think that should be the default sort method, instance admins can already adjust what the default sort method is

Tournaments and also digital versions of the game. I think Scrabble might be popular on Facebook?

Discoverability of communities across instances

If the spirit of the fediverse is to spread everything across small instances, then i think it would be really important to make communities, especially niche communities, easier to discover across instances. Since it is not planned to crawl federated instances community catalog, i think instance admins, or maybe even the lemmy...

Quick video demonstrating that lemmy.world sends every activity out twice ( i.imgur.com )

I realise this is a known issue and that lemmy.world isn't the only instance that does this. Also, I'm aware that there are other things affecting federation. But I'm seeing some things not federate, and can't help thinking that things would be going smoother if all the output from the biggest lemmy instance wasn't 50% spam....

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Being able to respond to old posts is a good thing, like classic forums. I always hated that Reddit didn't allow you to do that, and Reddit also didn't have sort options for New Comments or Active.

Imagine if someone made a post about a tech issue, it ranked high on Google results, lots of people in the comments with the same issue, and you found the solution, but the post was too old to reply to.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

It's there now, the crawler found you. Congrats!

Regarding sublinks and feeling concerned about what is going on with it ( lemmy.world )

Right now, I'm feeling concerned and wondering what is going on in regards to Sublinks here, since I have created a community for discussion on koalas about a week ago on here and have started and been doing work on it recently. But now I'm hearing about Sublinks and feeling concerned if I created it on the wrong instance or the...

Also the moderation tools could've been Java and connect to the Lemmy database/API (maybe with some pull requests to add to Lemmy's API), which to me sounds a lot better than saying fuck it and rewriting everything, it could've lived in its own repo anyways

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I still feel like adding those API routes and making PRs is easier than a full rewrite, with less fragmentation too

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar
Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I don't think the chosen language should matter that much, I'm just worried about the fragmentation of the contributors, and duplicated work that could've just been together, or as 3rd party tools that link to the base Lemmy database/API, or plugins/extensions eventually

Searchability is bad.

Growing a new community is hard. I wish people used lemmyverse more often.

Plugins for fediverse platforms.

Where is this up to? Is anyone thinking along these lines?

I've seen @db0 espouse such (eg https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/8581651) (sorry for the tag if annoying).

I've certainly thought of it myself ... because it's a pretty obvious idea for an ecosystem aiming for richness and sustainability.

Seems a perfect fit for reusable moderation tooling too, rather than each new platforms having that trouble.

This is essentially 's idea it seems.

@fediverse

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

When it comes to moderation tooling I'm honestly a little confused that there isn't more work or noise around a developing a sideloaded tool.

Yeah we just need volunteers to dedicate their time to it. But it's a lot easier to complain than it is to contribute.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

So ffmpeg gets a few thousand dollars for such a simple answer/solution? Sounds good to me?

With discord planning to show ads, how can the fediverse/lemmy benefit from another proprietary program making itself worse? (Like it was with reddit)

Do you think that the fediverse has something to gain with the enshitfication of discord? Are there voice chat programs in the fediverse that can benefit from it?

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I haven't tried matrix yet. What's a good instance I can create my community on and bridge with my discord? For gaming communities.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I guess, but I don't really want to contribute to the centralization all on the biggest instance

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

This reminds me of the designer of Deus Ex saying that the conspiracies are too real now lol

https://kotaku.com/warren-spector-thinks-deus-ex-is-too-real-for-2021-1846479651

"I’m not sure I’d make Deus Ex today. The conspiracy theories we wrote about are now part of the real world. I don’t want to support that.”

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

would be nice if the communities page could show the date of the most recent post or something
