I remember reading somewhere that microplastics are detectable in newborns now, so I guess technically we're already there.

I'm not well-versed in Iran's politics, but is there actually any hope that his replacement will be any better for the Iranian people? I'd have to imagine that whoever is next in line would already be very much aligned with his existing policies.

It depends on what state you're in.

A Crash spin-off and Skate It? Sorry pops, I'd say "no", too.

If you'd have thrown in some Wii Sports, on the other hand...

I was making a joke, but this was a really weird response.

Sometimes I love to entertain the idea of a timeline in which SEGA never dropped out of the hardware scene and was still a viable 4th option in the console space. It'd be real interesting to see what the gaming landscape would look like today if the Dreamcast had better market performance.

Though, I kinda expect Nintendo to be the next one of the Big Three to stop making hardware, if anybody. I know they've got plans for a Switch successor already, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Nintendo decides to either offer themselves up for a merger, or just goes purely software and starts making Marios and Zeldas for Playstation.

Nintendo console releases have followed a bit of a pattern over the last ~20 years. They'll release one and it'll be great (N64), and then the next one sells poorly (GC), then the next one does great again (Wii), and then the next one flops (WiiU)... The Switch is doing great, so I'm not holding my breath for the Switch 2, unfortunately.

I feel like the executives at Nintendo get too full of themselves whenever they have a successful release, and get sloppy with their next one, only to get slapped by the industry and player base and realize they have to actually try again if they want to win back their base. With Nintendo riding high on the Switch's success, I'm a bit pessimistic and assuming that their next console is going to sell very poorly. With the new console rumored to be another handheld, it's very likely that the hardware will be significantly underpowered compared to its competition at the time, which will once again hold Nintendo back from a lot of big AAA releases. And I'm not sure players will put up with Nintendo's stubbornness for much longer, especially if the next console isn't another huge hit like the Switch.

While I don't think it's likely, I think it's very plausible that the Switch's successor may end up being one of the last pieces of hardware Nintendo develops. I just don't have a lot of faith in Nintendo's leadership these days to imagine them sticking around the hardware scene for much longer. Their IPs are absolutely priceless, though, so I have no doubt that they'll continue making "Nintendo" games, but my prediction is that it'll be for other platforms.

I'm still a Nintendo fanboy at heart, though, so I hope I end up being way wrong.

I hate this change. While these features are neat if I just want a quick answer for something like if I wanna know some random fact about a person, it makes it so much harder to do any level of actual research on something anymore because you have to dig through so much garbage to find the real content.

And Google isn't alone in this. Bing and pretty much all of the big search engines are doing the same thing now. And while there are definitely alternative search engines out there, they lack the reach and rank sorting that Google and the other big players have already perfected.

So my options are either spend extra time with every search I perform by switching to various tabs and scrolling past auto-generated nonsense and sponsored results to find the answers I need, or use an objectively inferior product which may not even be able to point me to what I need within the first few pages of results. Neither option is a particularly great experience these days. The internet sucks so much lately.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Yeah, that seems strangely high. I feel like we'd hear about this much more frequently if it was that common.

    Drawing a line somewhere is better than not drawing a line at all.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    That's because the victims are children, and there are limitations to what you can publish about children in cases like this.

    Chozo ,

    Ah, I thought you were referring to the reporting of the article instead of her testimony, my bad.

    Why Are Rap*** & Ped** Protected In Jail?

    It’s actually sick, they already get a light sentence and also getting protected by the justice system while the victim they violated is heavily traumatized, probably for life. And what’s crazier is it’s happening more, I’m seeing it daily now every time I scroll, there’s another case. Just a few days ago a middle aged...

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    you think it’s right for someone to violate another just for a few minutes of satisfactions and traumatize them?

    You seem to think that.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    That seems like a pretty big oversight on the Lemmy development side of things. There should, at the very least, be an option to submit a report either anonymously or to have it tied to your account. A disclaimer could be included that anonymous reports cannot be responded to in case that is a concern for users.

    The only "miscommunication" was that they didn't obfuscate the terms through legalese more thoroughly.

    Chozo ,

    The only thing they've ever done on accident was make their logo look like a ballsack.

    None of the *bin apps I've tried seem to really function well just yet, so I mostly just use the default PWA for the Mbin instance I'm on. It works well enough. Though I'd really love a standalone app, especially if it could handle loading URLs to other instances clicked from outside the app; being taken to a community I'm already subscribed to but not being able to vote or comment because the link I clicked went to the original instance instead of the one I'm logged into is annoying.

    Chozo ,

    Fairly recently, I believe. I think it was earlier this year.

    There's some mirror/archive sites already set up with all the old content, though.

    I don't think anybody's forgotten, it's just that CDPR actually fixed almost all of the issues players had with the game, from performance bugs to totally revamped features and game mechanics. The game is in a much better state now than 3 years ago when that video was made; it's almost unrecognizable from its original release form now.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Yeah, upper management at CDPR ignored the devs who told them the game wasn't ready to ship yet, but they really wanted to take advantage of the new market of players staying home and playing video games after covid first hit.

    That short-sighted money grab cost them so much in the long run. It's actually insane to see CDPR's redemption arc play out after how badly they handled the launch.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    You can still do some slide-dash shenanigans in the current version, but it requires a few skill upgrades to really take advantage of. It's nowhere near as broken as it was originally, but it's still quite useful for zipping around the map.

    It’s also my opinion the female voice actor did an incredible job where as the male voice actor did a great job. Even in the most basic of side quests, it feels like she is giving it her all to be V in that situation whereas on the other hand some lines it feels like he’s just phoning it in.

    100% agree. Male V just sounds like "generic video game man who is tough, but not too tough", where as the female V sounds like a hardened, cold bitch that you don't want to fuck with. Cherami Leigh's got range.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    "You would understand it if you understood it."

    Yeah, somehow I don't think that wasn't as clever as you probably thought it was.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Money. It's a lot cheaper to let somebody else maintain your systems than to pay somebody to create and maintain your own, directly.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Sony really needs to get their shit together. It seems like they've been pissing off all their communities these last couple weeks.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Given what we've seen of the current trend of generative AI chatbots, it'll continue to be useless.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Ah, I misunderstood and see what you're referring to now. It looks like the way YouTube auto-truncates URLs caused the link to get mashed into the next line of text on the preview Lemmy fetched. As others mention, that's more of a Lemmy bug than anything.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    I have to imagine that the only reason we haven't seen this happen yet is because the technology to do so hasn't been invented yet.

    But, assuming that somebody comes up with some sort of projector-like device that can actually do this... is there anything that would legally prevent it from happening? Like, are there any sort of international laws against advertising on celestial bodies?

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Consider Japan, who does it differently. Death row inmates in Japan are not told their execution dates, as they had issues with people committing suicide before they could be executed. So now they only find out with just a few hours of notice when they're going to be executed. You could be sitting in your cell, ten years into your sentence, enjoying an otherwise ordinary, quiet day in prison, only to be told that it's time to die, whether you're ready for it or not, the equipment and staff are already prepared and there's no time left to argue your case.

    Honestly, I don't know which one is "better". They're both cruel in their own ways.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    This is something that Nintendo should have had a better fix for years ago. With my PS5, I can access my screenshots and video clips from the app and save them directly to my device. I can't believe that Nintendo hasn't managed to do something as simple as this, they're just so unwilling to make a modern product.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    For PS5, the last ~2 weeks of screenshots are accessible directly from the app, as well as video captures under a certain size (I think generally a 3-5 minute max). The console automatically backs them up to your PS cloud account.

    Ooohhh hell yeah, there's a lot of artists in here who I absolutely love, and I can tell that these others I'm not familiar with are going to be awesome, too! May start listening to some of these while I work tonight. Is there a Lemmy community set up already for similar music recommendations?

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    That animation is gorgeous! It reminds me a bit of Redline, as far as how the art conveys energy and motion. This looks fun as hell.

    I just watched a video where the director of John Wick was talking about how hard he had to fight the studio to kill the puppy right at the top of the movie.

    Just to clarify for anybody who misread this like I did: They kill a dog in the script of the movie. The director didn't have to actually kill a dog and film it.

    If you want that kinda video, check Noem's laptop.

    That's why Spitz said to be angry in the Steam reviews instead of their Discord. People mistakenly took it as a dismissive whine, but that was actually a very important comment that I feel many people overlooked. Sony ain't gonna do anything differently unless there is actual, tangible damage to their brand. That damage doesn't come from chat rooms, that comes from storefront reviews.

    Keep the bad reviews coming if you want any hope of Sony relenting.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    I'd be down to give Hellpals a try.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    To be fair, the game wasn't supposed to be sold in those countries to begin with. Sony and Valve screwed up the region settings.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    Honestly, I think Sony is going to be more stubborn than Valve. I saw in another thread where some people were getting approved for their Steam refunds even after passing the 2-hour refund window, so it looks like Valve may already be the first to cave.

    Sony's probably going to continue digging their heels in, though.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    LemmyWorld is already defederated from a lot of instances that the average user is likely to be blocking, anyway, so chances are those communities won't show up in your All feed to begin with.

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    On most Lemmy instances, you can go to the bottom of the front page and click the "Instances" link, and it'll show you all the other instances that one is connected to and which ones they block.

    For Lemm.ee: https://lemm.ee/instances

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    I'm actually really surprised that Valve is loosening up on this one. They usually play hardball when it comes to refunding a game past the 2 hour mark.

    Going by the price being listed in what appears to be USD, I'm going to assume this is a US player, but is there any confirmation on where this person is from? My theory was that Valve wouldn't issue refunds unless you were from a soon-to-be-unsupported region, so that could change my thoughts on things.

    EDIT: Also just noticed this was a refund back to the Steam wallet, and not to the original payment method. I've not refunded a game on Steam in many years, but is this their standard practice these days?

    Chozo ,
    @Chozo@fedia.io avatar

    I don't think Spitz or the CM position in general should be the focus of the discussion at all. He's a human, and he's got a tough job right now and a lot of people venting their frustrations at him, directly. Him having a snotty attitude after having this fiasco dropped on him is a bad look to be sure, but hardly the issue. He's not in charge of making decisions for Arrowhead or Sony, he's just the mouthpiece.
