I certainly think so. We have the extremes always, but on the whole, we seem to be moving in the direction of progress, fewer wars, more conservation, better equality, etc. This stuff just takes time.

Trump would just drop 10 MOABs on Gaza day one for the fun of it. Luckily, he said he'd "only be a dictator for a day," so day two, I'm sure nothing bad will happen /s

Please remind your friends and family to vote. If there was ever an election that mattered since the Civil War, it's most likely this one, where one party isn't even trying to hide that they no longer want a democracy.

This seems like a no brainer to me, but absolutely. Cuts emissions, saves you tons of money on fuel, makes you healthier. Unless you are hauling something, there's usually no reason you need to drive 4 miles when it can be biked instead.

I rarely drive anyways, but did the math and I'm saving around $800+ in Costco fuel alone. This would be significantly more expensive if I bought gas anywhere else. That's enough to buy a new ebike battery every year and still have savings left over for gas money when you actually do need to drive somewhere without public transit.

The end result is that I'm basically getting an ebike for free in gas savings alone after two years of use, lmao. The vaguely sickening part is that even pedaling around 15 mph, I still manage to arrive at my destination only 10 minutes slower than driving, which is insane. At certain times of the night, even in suboptimal conditions (eg, construction on the bike lanes), I've actually made it home by bike in the same amount of time it takes to drive through dozens of traffic lights, traffic, stop signs, etc. And charging my bike costs pennies.

Wahots ,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Not just that, but it also puts significantly less wear and tear on the road vs cars. So you can save money there by getting more people to bike.

Do we really need every road to be dedicated to cars anyways? It's a lot of repaving. You could dedicate a few roads to bikes, or bikes and buses, and potentially repave way less often. And repaving and repainting isn't cheap. The more you think about it, the weirder it is that we've paved a massive grid of roads so that anyone can drive in a 500x500 foot square. Dedicating some foot traffic, some to bike and bus/rail, and some to cars could help people get away from having to drive everywhere because anything else is too unsafe due to cars.

@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

For shopping, it makes a lot of sense too. The shop I need is across town. Hauling stuff back on my bike would suck if it wasn't an ebike because there are steep hills, and I'm carrying back like...bulk soap refills and other cleaning products.

It also makes biking a lot more safe when bike lanes end, as you can keep up with cars in "sharrows" until you reach the next painted bike lane or protected bike lane. I know people freak out about ebikes doing 30mph, but when traffic isn't doing 25mph like the sign says, it's nice to be able to keep pace with inattentive cars. Most of the time, I go slower than traditional bikes anyways to save on battery and get a solid workout with a heavy bike. It's like one of those training bikes at the gym, except it goes places and has a battery when you need it!

It's gotten me into the best shape I've ever been in for downhill mountain biking. I ride so much more and push a much heavier ebike daily, makes the mountain bike feel ultra light and responsive on the days when I'm biking for fun. :)

Google is too big and needs to be broken up. We have entire areas like watches and cars where stuff is just laughably ancient or poorly designed. To my knowledge, android auto doesn't even dynamically scale by screen size, it depends on google and the car maker working together to determine the right size. Cannot control features like AC or heating either.

When you get these mega corps like facebook, google, airlines, train companies, or food/drink companies, they buy up all the competition and then run them into the ground. We are down to like....two very stagnant smartphone OSs now, too.

You have to have regulations against this stuff, or greed takes over until the goverment mandates that stuff like insulin and inhalers are capped at $35/mo so these cunts don't charge $400 for lifesaving medicine.

Same goes for the housing and rental market. Break up these large companies that buy up all the housing and apartments and slap algorithmic rent and purchasing options on them.

Wahots ,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Inb4 "both parties are the same".

While I hate stuff like these rollbacks, we are already starting to see EVs save people money on gas and service, and they are stupidly fast compared to ICE counterparts. That's something Americans of all stripes can get behind.

Once I tried an ebike, I realized I never wanted to go back to gas engines. So fast, so much torque, and pennies to charge vs $70 gas tanks at Costco (even more at a normal gas station). It just makes economic sense to run PEVs in all major urban areas in addition to mass transit.

With traffic and some protected bike lanes, even a conventional bike can almost beat a car in a 7-14 mile drive in my city. An ebike makes it even easier.

The best advice I can give you is to stop actively looking and just have fun. Join mountain biking groups, hop on Meetup and do fun things in your city or state, and make friends naturally. The healthiest relationships stem from natural friendships because you build up a base of stuff in common and have a lot of trust before you ever make the jump to "do you wanna go out with me?"

All else fails, you can join singles adventure clubs which also look quite fun. The best relationships I've had with men and women were from natural friendships. The most awkward and short ones were generally from dating apps or where they just didn't have much in common with me.

I met my SO through playing 1,000 hours of a video game with them during the pandemic, constantly being on VC with them, then going on a really fun ski trip with them for about a week. I got to learn their habits, temperament, how they handle conflict, etc all over a long period of time. And a lot of my other friends matched in similar ways.

For what it's worth, I notice now when people are kinda hoping to like...date or something vs just be friends. Their body language and behaviors are just ever so slightly different than those that just want to be friends. I think when you aren't looking, people notice that you are more relaxed and don't put up walls as much. Might be one reason why it's easier to make friends as a kid, who knows, though.

Russia and China always do this shit, it's going to be very problematic when one of their poorly trained pilots screws up and kills a bunch of people and themselves.

As China and Iran hunt for dissidents in the US, the FBI is racing to counter the threat ( apnews.com )

After a student leader of the historic Tiananmen Square protests entered a 2022 congressional race in New York, a Chinese intelligence operative wasted little time enlisting a private investigator to hunt for any mistresses or tax problems that could upend the candidate’s bid, prosecutors say....

Even some domestic brands like Juiced go on sale for like, $1,200 for a Juiced Ripracer. Aventon appears to make good stuff too, if you want bike shop support. I've had my bike for a month and put 320 miles on it. Fun little bike :)

194 nautical miles isn't terribly far, though. For port to port, sure. For oceanic shipping, I don't think 194 is going to cut it. I think we will probably have to do SMRs or efuels to really cut cargo ship and cruise ship emissions when crossing the Pacific or Atlantic. Though I don't know where nuclear powered shipping (in non-military applications) is in terms of progress.

Probably for spare parts and then used as dummy aircraft after that, all for Ukraine. For less than 20k per plane, that's pretty damn good. And Ukraine could certainly use the parts. Though I hope we also donate a considerable amount of our aging out planes and tanks. They'd serve Ukraine well and get second, well-deserved life overseas.

How do you get rid of bad neighbors?

So our neighbors have been a growing problem for a few months now. They seem to be a flop house for six or seven people, most of them look high all day. They go out and Rev a Harley at 3am, they burn plastic been our houses in a fire pit, they have a new dog every two weeks because they keep getting out and getting hit by...

Look, this guy is obviously a monster, but castrating someone doesn't undo the harm. That's just barbaric. Hard labor making license plates all day? Sure. Long sentence? I could see that.

We gotta have some moral minimums, though. Stuff like execution and castration is too far. What if they have the wrong guy? Even if it was him, mutilating their bodies is not what we should be doing on this continent.

After living in left and right states for many years, there is a stupid amount of common ground over stuff like solar, right to repair, rent control and housing, railway infrastructure, healthcare costs, quality careers and compensation, education costs and more.

We might see something like solar for different reasons (climate change vs. energy independence), but there's ways of rephrasing a solution to have it both ways.

The only thing that really seems to get in the way are petty online disagreements that then snowball into stuff like accusing people of shitting in litterboxes, hypothesising that gender diverse people started an international war or accusing people of genocide because their underwear was just revealed to be made in a super repressive country. That's the noise that prevents us from getting shit like bullet trains in or healthcare costs drawn down.

We will continue to wait for the holy grail of micro LED monitors and phones. So far, all of my OLED phones have burnt in around the 5 year mark. Avoiding OLED like the plague for longer lasting devices like Monitors, TVs and (god forbid) car displays.

Even more general, but I see it so often that it is driving me nuts.

Wear light colored clothes and reflective/high vis layers at night when crossing streets or biking in the late afternoon, evening, and night hours. Cars cannot see dark colors very well on dark backgrounds or against oncoming headlights. Same with people stepping into bike lanes in dark clothes. If you are biking, have multiple lights, front and back. Ideally, on the bike and on you.

If you are walking a dog, give them a light vest, especially if they are head of you and crossing before you do on a longer leash. You want cars and bikes to see you well before they get there.

This is really good. Americans need an easy High Speed Rail victory and the experience that comes with building the first few HSR projects in the US. Fingers crossed for a planned, federally funded, and organized Cascadia HSR that links up Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver, BC.

At this point, we need to start somewhere. Boring under the city would be insanely expensive. Especially since this is a private company. Someday, we will have a politician with the balls to lay out a vast plan like the highway network of the 50s or the space program of the 60s. However, even babysteps like this are good.

Gotta take the W where you can and prove that HSR is a completely viable option in this country, just like literally everywhere else, haha.

We can't just kill every animal we don't like. Elephants, wolves, bears, etc. all play an incredibly important role in the health of our ecosystems and help keep plants and animals healthy. Sometimes, they keep nuisances at bay, too, or keep stuff like prion diseases in check.

I get that elephants can eat crops or wolves can eat cattle, but we've managed to build space shuttles and end worldwide diseases through amazing vaccine campaigns. I'm sure we can rewild some major areas and build better, non-lethal deterrants in others.

It's helped restore Yellowstone's biodiversity and drive incredible amounts of tourism after the wolves were reintroduced.

Time will tell. Everything sounds far too good to be true, considering that the social media platform is tiny and hemorrhaging money.

    Looking for recommendations ( mototecusa.com )

So, I've been considering micromobility options recently to help me get out a little bit more and range better. My dog told me he'd appreciate it if I got out a little more on my off-days. I don't know why he's gotta be so judgy like that......

Well, I upgraded the controller and managed to strip the screws. A repair guy got them out by tapping an allen key deeper by hammering it in with a mallet. Had I known that technique, though, would have done it myself.

Other than that, nothing else. Brakes are loud a
AF after you bed them, but it's quite nice, makes cars and pedestrians notice you, which is good for situational awareness. People actively get out of your way, lmao.

My bike was also 2022 inventory and had a bit of rust on the screws on nonstructural parts. I brushed it off and added some oil and threadlocker where needed.

The nice thing about this bike is that you can find the brake pads online, relatively common (smaller size than my mountain bike running guide Rs, but shimano sells the smaller pads too). Tires are standard. Tubes are standard. Chain appears to be standard. Spokes appear standard. Uses mineral oil for hydraulic lines. The battery, though I have not tested it with Grintech 3rd party batteries, appears to be standard with a hot and neutral line, no BMS pin that fucks you. So you may may be able to rock this bike for ages after parts have been discontinued. Uses a standard XLR charger connector. Motor controller upgrades are available through the manufacturer, which can deliver significantly more current than the base controller (be careful with those m3 screws by the crank, they've been tightened by the hand of god.)

Only weak spots for this bike: no front shocks (though you can find them online), single speed drivetrain, grips are non locking but can be replaced. Service options aside from velofix are limited.

If those downsides are fine, I'd say get it. This bike is fun as hell and very comfy even if you are 6ft+ and 170+ pounds.

Be careful with the throttle and pedals when you unlock Race mode in settings. Gives 1,200+ watts all at once, which can cause you to do wheelies if you aren't careful, lol.
