I mean, you can use that same logic on the US government, even Democrat run ones, which have supported genocides in the past and even current ongoing ones, and have tried to stomp out left movements, been racist, sexist, and homophobic. But people have still supported the US and the Democrat party and called themselves leftist. The point is, I assume as I'm not a CCP Stan myself or anything, is to give critical support to back an actual socialist project and give a counterweight to a pure single superpower world (esp. When that superpower has destroyed or undermined almost every left project it can in the world). Critical support meaning you pick out the good from the bad, supporting the good and criticizing the bad. China actually puts a leash on its billionaires = good. But they seem to be forcing some cultural integration of Uyghurs = bad. But they're providing lots of housing and cheap EV's = good. But they can have bad working conditions = bad. But they're helping support economies and infrastructure in the global South with the Belt and Road project = good. But they keep doing that shit with territory in the south seas = bad. But they seem to have a long-term plan for implementing communism that they are actually following = good. And so on. I do think some people go too far in being CCP supportive, but I also think some people on Lemmy go too far the other direction, and think everyone that gives the slightest critical support to China or analyzes some US propaganda on China a bit before swallowing it is a CCP troll.
In the end, it's a mixed bag, but I do think there is some worth to not having a single hegemonic superpower in the world, so other leftist countries or colonized global south ones have alternative access to allies, trade, and support without bowing down to the US and their often reactionary policies. Cuba for example was doing pretty good until the Soviet Union fell and basically the only market became the western, US-controlled one that they had been mostly sanctioned the hell out of. I wish it was a better country than China, but hopefully they improve their social issues as they improve economically, which tends to be the pattern. I just wish they'd stop doing the aggressive maneuvers near the Philippines and Vietnam.
He wrote that the justifications for Israel’s war in Gaza became “difficult to defend” and that “whatever the justification you’re either advancing a policy that enables the mass starvation of children, or you’re not.” The post received an outpouring of support with hundreds of likes and comments in just a few...
Trump did that exact thing in a recent speech (I don't watch him but I saw the video clip in a recent Daily Show episode). IIRC, he even literally called Jews who don't support Israel "bad Jews" and ones who do "good Jews". And he's not even Jewish!
The Weeping Angels apparently originated with Steven Moffat seeing a statue of a weeping angel in a structure in a cemetery and returning later to find out it was gone. At least according to this RadioTimes article. They first appeared in 2007 in the episode Blink....
Hamas is a response to Israeli violence and colonialism for the last 70 years. You can depose them but another group will rise up with arms to resist colonialism as long as Israel keeps doing the same thing. And they did before Hamas, so of course they will after. Plus, it will be even harder as these events drive recruitment for Hamas. America didn't get rid of the Taliban by bombing Afghanistan for 20 years, either. It doesn't work.
Israel has been occupying Gaza the whole time despite their rhetoric. They control all their infrastructure and built a big wall to keep them in, and control all travel in and out, plus they constantly spied on them with everything from drones to listening devices to taking random hostages and trying to get info out of them. Gaza doesn't have control of their own food, power, trash, travel, water, sea territory, money, etc. That's basically an occupation, no matter what they say. The only reason to need to take it a step farther and put troops on the inside instead of all along the wall outside is so they can kill more Palestinians.
The scare tactics of claiming they'll never be safe is how you get a genocide, both now and in the past. It's that thought in WW2 that leads to rhetoric like, "We tried to let them live in peace with these stars and putting them in their own spaces in towns, but they keep causing trouble. They even want to do a Warsaw Ghetto Uprising over and over again. We're going to need to kill all the Jews, it's just the only solution."
That's fair. The last paragraph I should have attributed to the Zionist thought instead of that commenter in particular. I mostly just wanted to demonstrate how the "They want to do an October 7th over and over again!" scare tactic leads to the genocidal thoughts and actions we see happening now. I was commenting while emotional, I'll edit it so it's not so harsh and personally aggressive.
Well they already tried suing them when they began accepting girls and changed their name the first time to Scouts BSA, but that didn't work. But truthfully the two organizations have different missions and methods....
I like how you avoid saying what the issue is, because it sounds a lot worse when you say it's genocide. I think that's a fair line in the sand to draw for people. Hopefully Biden movies on that stance soon so we don't get Trump. We all better keep pushing him.
What a cool system where a judge openly breaks the law for the man whok appointed her and supreme court justices openly take bribes, and there are no consequences for either.
I hope Biden can grow and improve quicker, like preferably before election day so a bunch of voters won't feel bad about voting for him. I really don't want Trump.
He's pretty good on most things, except the genocide issue. Which is unfortunate because that's a big one for a whole lot of people. Which makes sense. No one will say Mussolini helped the trains run on time or Hitler's wars helped the German economy. The other bad things they did make those things seem less consequential. Genocide is like that. A lot of people here are lucky because they live in the imperial core, but for others who knows those being affected by the foreign policy, then it's priority rises even more.
So is there a point to the Girl Scouts now? What are they going to do? Start accepting boys? Or try to widen their activities to compete with the Boy Scouts so they don't lose membership?
Correct, but girls was their mark of differentiation. Without one, what will they do with this other organization going on their turf? Will they react? Adjust? That's what I'm saying.
I appreciate the clarification, but I was curious how they avoid redundancy. Luckily, for anyone else who is curious, @MerrySkeptic put a summary of their distinctions in a comment below.
He hasn't released on streaming yet or YouTube only insta and Twitter. Once it's up on streaming he said all proceeds will go to The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)....
Well keep in mind that a lot of Lemmy users (Lemmings? Lemmites? Lemmitors?) are from Reddit now. They are slightly more anticapitalist and anti-corporation, but otherwise, a lot of us are basically Redditors who took over this similar social media site.
Right, but one is hoping for thousands of people to not act like people, that is emotionally to issues that effect them, and the other one is hoping for a small group of people who have shown a history of bowing to pressure continue to do so. It's much more realistic and a better avenue of effort.
I still think this place better than Reddit, though. I think a lot of the good users left, even if a majority weren't politically aligned with original Lemmy. I browse through Reddit front page links when I'm bored at work, but I rarely find good stuff in the comments like I used to. It's just mean and toxic, or vapid and pointless.
You haven't even offered any counter information. You're just accusing people of lying or not researching when they're the ones pulling out actual graphs, figures, and historical facts.
Usually when I make these "is it cyberpunk" posts, I try to pick movies that are popular enough that I can assume most people have already seen them. I'm not sure if Summer Wars is at that level but I wanted to ask this question anyway. Because really, there's only one aspect to this movie that could be considered cyberpunk...
I've seen a couple and they were mostly Zionists defending the genocide. So far, they haven't reflected well on their state, but if there's anyone who actually doesn't like the atrocities committed by Israel in Israel, I'd be curious to see if they exist here. The only one I've seen in articles is that one who sent to jail instead of participate in the IDF.
No, but I could see the misunderstanding. When I said "here", I meant on Lemmy. I was just commenting on the people from Israel I've met so far on Lemmy. And how I also would love to see some more varied opinions from Israelis here on Lemmy, because the few I've run into were pretty pro-genocide.
I try sometimes but as you can tell by my history, I often fail. I need people to populate the other communities more, though, so I can avoid politics lol. Find other communities and comment or post, try different sorts, like scaled or new, instead of just Top or Active.
This guy's videos are usually pretty good. They got a quick pace, good editing, and explain things really well. They are a socialist so they have a bias in that way, but they'd be the first to admit it and to say that every creator has a bias of some sort or another.
The United States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a bill that would expand the federal definition of anti-Semitism, despite opposition from civil liberties groups....
No, this definitely seems different and new from all the recent articles about it I've seen. This vote passed Wednesday, not in December. It's a response to the protests at universities. And it's a bill, so it can be passed into law. I think you're confusing two different things.
This expands the definition of antisemitism to bring critical of Israel at all or comparing Zionism to Nazism, and would codify it into law if it, passes the Senate and is signed by the President. So there is still time to stop this, and it's a big deal, so people should be angry about it.
I didn't know there are community challenges. What a cute idea. Can't wait to do some voting! Is there a megathread anywhere where I can look at past community challenges?
Hopefully we can learn from past movements like Occupy, which were unfocused, and apply the lessons learned to future protests, like this Gaza one. It kind of scared me when they said larger struggle, because it brought me immediately back to Occupy, like you said.
I'm definitely not voting for Trump. I live in a blue state where my vote doesn't matter anyway. I'm just saying, you guys aren't helping as much as you think you are. Look at it from their point of view. They're not thinking rationally, and honestly, I don't expect them to. It's an emotionally charged situation when people you know or people like you are being genocided. The effort would be better spent trying to force Biden to change tactics on supporting Israel before election day.
He's had lots of time to reign him in and he hasn't at all. They've just given them more money, weapons, and support. Until there's been actual actions and not just words, on this particular issue, they are the only exact same.
Until then, the threat of a Trump Presidency hopefully impresses upon Biden the need to do something, anything, other than what he's been doing (a wag of his finger every now and then and that's it).
I don't want Trump back. You don't want Trump back. It's better to spend your energy trying to push Biden on this issue as soon as possible.
