Scientists restore brain cells impaired by a rare genetic disorder

A therapy that restores brain cells impaired by a rare genetic disorder may offer a strategy for treating conditions like autism, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.

Yes, I think many of us agree that our condition is not a disease to be cured, but only a difference. And besides, there is no 'cure'. The only way to stop autists from being born is eugenics, and I hope everyone knows how wrong and undesirable eugenics is...

The fact is that all 'therapies' offered to autists or their guardians are not intended to benefit us. They are intended to make us more convenient, and less disturbing, for NTs. 😐

PatternChaser ,
@PatternChaser@mas.to avatar

@Dremmwel @Mux @pa @actuallyautistic

I respect your view, but you seem to be reading-in things that people haven't said.

For myself, I would never try to coerce anyone into 'treatment' they don't want, nor deprive anyone of treatment they do want. Nor would I "cancel" research...

At the least, it should be made clear that all 'therapies' offered to autists are not for our benefit, but for the convenience of NTs. They're to make us seem more like them. <shudder>

It's a relief, but it feels a bit weird. I guess 50+ years of bafflement and self-loathing don't just go away overnight. But I made a bargain with the universe that I'd try to give living as my real self a go if the diagnosis was autism.

Just need to find out who/what my 'real self' is.

I often hear about temperature dysregulation, but I don't think I experience that myself. Rather, I experience sensory sensitivity to heat.

I was wondering how this manifests in the community. Are you sensitive to cold? To heat? To dryness? Humidity? Or are you generally dysregulated? And what does that mean for you?

PatternChaser ,
@PatternChaser@mas.to avatar

@Mux @actuallyautistic I'm usually cold when I go to bed, but when I wake in the morning, my hands and feet are on fire, and I get up and walk around for a few minutes with no shoes or socks, to let them cool down. Then I get properly dressed.

Question about isolation:

When i go too long without human contact, all my mind does is have imaginary conversations with people. I can't use it for anything else. Video ganes are sometimes enough of a distraction, otherwise i'm composing, i'm looping the same thoughts i never got to share with someone, 24/7. Watching a movie, reading a book, doesn't matter. My eyes are open but what's going on in my brain doesn't change.

Any suggestions for how to manage that?

Following diagnosis, you have a new vocabulary that you didn't have before, to explain feelings (etc) that you didn't recognise, or didn't know you had, before.

As a result, your outward behaviour can become more obviously autistic; perhaps it might seem "heightened".

I don't know of articles, though. Maybe someone else does?

I think that's how my #autism became more outwardly obvious — physical brain damage caused by #MS made it much harder for me to mask, when my mental horsepower was reduced.

Do my comrades use functioning labels?

If you do - why? Why are they important to you?

@actuallyautistic

PatternChaser ,
@PatternChaser@mas.to avatar

@melindrea @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic

High- and low-functioning are medical terms. They refer to those who don't have special educational needs, and those who do. Just that. Only that.

They are convenience-vocabulary for medical professionals, badly misunderstood and abused in everyday chitchat.

They are best avoided.

I'm in the UK, where we have nurse-specialists, with specialist training. The man who diagnosed me is fully and adequately qualified. I got to know him during and after my diagnosis, and I can confirm that he has a real and in-depth understanding of autism and autists, as so few NTs do.

PatternChaser ,
@PatternChaser@mas.to avatar

@robrecht @melindrea @actuallyautistic

"Use of the term “low-functioning” in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) literature dates to at least 1969 (Goldfarb, Goldfarb, & Pollack, 1969), and the term “high autistic” was used as early as 1973 (DeMyer et al., 1973). These modifiers were often used to characterize children with ASD on the basis of characteristics not specific to ASD (e.g., IQ, language)."

@actuallyautistic I'm probably inviting trouble by talking about this, but I kinda feel like I owe it to myself at least to say this:

I used to be unconditionally supportive of people self-diagnosing.

These days I'm kinda... Less so.

And the reason for that is the pandemic.

Before I continue, I want to emphasise that I will -never- tell anyone that what they've concluded about themselves is wrong.

And I don't want to dismiss how anyone feels.

Yes, I've read so many times about people angling for an autism diagnosis to get the benefits. What benefits? I know of no country where autists can gain 'benefits'. In some countries, people with mental health issues, perhaps quite specific ones, can get some help. But I don't think it's the sort of help that might cause others to want that same help?
