Restore immich photo backup?

I have been backing up the photos folder for my immich. Something weird happened with one of my hard drives so i had to restore. It has a folder for each year and inside there is a folder for each day. immich doesnt support the ability to drag and drop the year folder into the UI. What's the best way to get all my media back...

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Add the existing base folder as an external library, and use a new folder as the main immich folder for uploads.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Permissions issue maybe? Although being able to see the files in the containers terminal seems like that wouldn't be the case.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Does it need to be a native app? There are good web calendars out there as part of things like Nextcloud, SoGo, etc..

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If this is a serious comment, a lot.

Immich is server based with a webUI, multi user support, has automatic backup from your devices, with face tagging and object tagging.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Nextcloud is so slow though, I just wish they would fix the performance of it. Taking 2+ seconds to load a file browser is crazy.

NC has also had some major data loss/corruption bugs I've been hit with, I switched away from it because I was tired of the bugs.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah, shotwell looks good if you're a single user and already have all your images stored locally, although if you wanted face tagging DigiKam is also a local only photo management app that does some more advanced stuff.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Wasabi and iDrive E2 are 2 others I know of similar to S3 and B2.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

IMO backups on the same provider aren't really backups. Good that they had some at a different one.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Aren't the networking features just toggles in the settings already? I remember seeing several of the mentioned features in there.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I'd say it depends on what your hardware supports for encoding and for playback.

Best quality at small size = AV1

Good with decent support = h265

Best support = h264

I haven't used any of the 3, but from a look over them superfile looks a lot more user friendly and has a nicer overall look.

Edit; the install process is rough though, complains about missing glibc but searching for that package in apt doesn't show anything promising. It also seems to require some kind of third party font that isn't included? I gave up lol that's too much for me to deal with.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It's definitely a big learning curve with how complex installing things on linux is haha, I'm still used to windows just open the exe installer and that's it.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I mean there's that, but it's a lot of work for a dev too.

I would rather Linux just be able to detect what's missing and install it for me. In the case of a lot of missing components, what it says is missing will be named completely different from the package you need to install which makes it really hard.

It was always nice with windows installers because they would come with the needed components, or windows would just prompt to install them automatically.

I guess that's essentially what Flatpak solves!

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Nonetheless, as a Linux user, you are encouraged to build directly from source.

Yeah screw that lol, I want my OS to just work and be easy to use with minimal fuss.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Generally to depend on a container it needs to be in the same compose project, so if you move gluetun into the one with qbittorrent it should work fine.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Intel Quicksync would do it, no need for a dedicated GPU.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes hence no need for a dedicated GPU

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I didn't say CPU? Quicksync is Intels dedicated hardware transcoder in the iGPU.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Iirc if you pay for it the main thing is selective sync

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Syncthing keeps folders in sync between multiple devices, it doesn't have any concept of users since it's not designed for that.

You want Nextcloud or similar 'google drive' replacement if you want to share individual files and folders with specific users easily.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Well each share can choose which devices it shows up for, so you don't really need users in that sense. But also if you run it under another user account it will have its own clean profile too.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Definitely worth using specific versions on your docker images if you're doing automatic updates.

traefik:mimolette for example should keep you on 2.x versions while still getting patches and bug fixes.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I mean same, I say it's worth using but I don't do it either haha.

Everything is backed up every night, so if something breaks to the point of data loss I just fix it after.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I wouldn't worry about a specific number of cores, as that doesn't translate at all to CPU performance. Instead look at single thread performance.

So something with a Core i5-7500 on ebay for example, should be able to get one in your price range after buying more RAM.

Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices

They have a dedicated set of servers your devices and app are connecting to, that's what home assistant is essentially replacing.

It's not just app > device, it's app > server > device.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

What is it? I looked up rofi but that's even more confusing. Maybe a screenshot or two would help in the readme?

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That's neat but how is it related to bitwarden? That's where I'm stumped.

Simple fix on KDE wayland for windows to remember their last position ( imgur.com )

Thanks to /u/azvasKvklenko@sh.itjust.works for mentioning KDE window rules. In KDE, we can add rules for windows so that they behave in specific ways. One rule that can be added is the position: remember rule, and it's possible to make that rule apply to all windows by removing the match field. This way, closing and reopening...

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Why on earth isn't this the default behavior lol, who is out there wanting their windows to just open up randomly.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It's very minimal in normal use, maybe like an hour or two a month at most.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Do you even need E2EE if it's a private server with no federation? It seems like transport encryption would be fine which almost everything has.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah most things support transport encryption, SSL for example with HTTPS.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

What do you feel it's missing? It's a tad slower than I'd like but otherwise works quite well.

What to be aware of before opening port 25 on a postfix Raspberry Pi?

I have a raspberry pi running postfix. I Realised unless I open port 25 I absolutely cannot receive emails (I have 587 open and can send but not receive them). However I heard there are scaries online which someone could potentially send emails from your server without consent. I believe as well my ISP doesn't block port 25. Is...

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If you own your domain name, then you can use any email service and still have control over it and move around if needed.

which launcher would you suggest and why?

so I finally got the motivation to install lineage os to my phone after thinking about it like year. and now that I finally modified this phone I started thinking about ricing this phone a bit. I'm looking for a launcher that isn't too minimalistic and with a decent amount of customization. kinda like kde bit you know... stable....

Nova is solid, still my go to after trying plenty of others.

How to make it so frequently used sites don't constantly require 2FA? [SOLVED]

EDIT: After reading all the responses, I’ve decided to allow cookies to persist after they close the browser, which I expect will make it so that 2FA doesn’t kick in as often, at least not on their most frequently used web sites. I may also look into privacy oriented browser extensions that might offer some protection, such...

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve configured Firefox on their Linux laptop not to keep any cookies after the browser is closed.

Why? Like I get it on your own computers where you're willing to deal with the hassle of that. But it's a huge pain for someone who just wants to use their PC.

I may also look into privacy oriented browser extensions that might offer some protection, such as Privacy Badger.

uBlock Origin is all you need.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Just go to /var/lib/docker/volumes and copy the data out of the relevant volume. No need to mount anything.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Who is out there running compose down -v when they want to keep their data lol

Not a fan of this change, using volumes is what makes docker truly portable between systems. It's not the responsibility of Immich if people are running the wrong commands when managing their system.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

RAID 5 or 6 maybe with 6 drives?

First before doing anything, do you have reliable tested backups in place for the data on the drives?

Hardware RAID is pretty difficult to work with, if the RAID controllers are the same model with the same firmware moving the drives should in theory work.

It's fantastic, they add so much useful stuff and it looks nice.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You can uninstall with Canta and Shizuku, both on the F-Droid store.

I need my (Android, ofc) phone to be on in case of family calls / messages, so I can’t use “Do Not Disturb”

Add them to your contacts that are allowed to bypass do not disturb?

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I would love to see a good Lightroom alternative in terms of ease of use.

Darktable is great and the results are good, but it's pretty complex to use and has a really steep learning curve. And it doesn't do photo management other than a few basics. Even after months of use I still struggle to replicate what I can do in Lightroom.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Very much not a fan, it's extremely slow and doesn't do photo editing so won't show changes to my RAW files.

MangoPenguin , (edited )
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Hmm, when I tried editing in external software it doesn't seem to show the edited RAWs when browsing in digikam, because the only way to sync that info is with XMP sidecars and those don't work well for transferring editing changes between software.

I have about 30k RAW files and the initial scan was only a few percent done after over an hour last time I tried it. Lightroom does the initial scan including preview generation in maybe 30 minutes.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Is it because USB doesn't expose proper UUIDs or something?

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Self hosting personal photos doesn't generally require opening anything up to the internet, so most backdoors would not be accessible by anyone but you.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah you definitely want each 'thing' in its own compose file. Take a look at Portainer or Dockge to easily manage multiple compose files.
