Conversely, if you want less cheap comments like this one you should not.

Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war' ( kyivindependent.com )

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine's partners "are afraid of Russia losing the war" and would like Kyiv "to win in such a way that Russia does not lose," Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists attended by the Kyiv Independent....

People forgot quickly how hesitant the European countries were, and still are, to send equipment to Ukraine. Germany didn't send anything but helmets for a long while. They also cancelled North Stream, leading to increased inflation and lessened economic competitive viability. If anything, the proxy war is exhausting both Russian and European economies, with the US and China ready to scoop up the scraps in preparation for their intensifying trade war.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

The European countries bordering Russia, i.e. the Baltics, Nordics and Eastern Europe, contribute a far bigger percentage of their GDP to aid Ukraine than the others (if you ignore the new policies of Slovakia and Hungary). The US and UK gives/sells the most weapons, but Ukraine is pretty much bankrolled by the EU/EEA.

The point is that the EU has sustained big economic losses from cutting ties with Russia, leading to movement of industry and production away from Europe and over to the other biggest economies.

Urist , (edited )
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes. Germany and many other European countries had little to none political support for investing in their militaries. Now they do, and it is going to be a problem later on. Capitalists want return on their investments, after all.

The EU is very much on the top of the global neocolonial food chain, but they were mostly (looking at you France) not doing like super a lot (looking at you UK and US) of "interventions" to secure their interests all over the world.*

* Most Western powers are part of NATO, which is its own can of worms. Still, Russia invading Ukraine has made support for NATO much more popular (see Sweden and Finland as case studies), and now the bloc is more consolidated than ever. The timing could not be worse with respect to the overtly fascist leaders gaining traction in the very same countries.

Everyone in Europe knows really well that there is a reactionary wind blowing through the lands. Historically, this has been conducive to conflict and war. The conditions are different right now than then, but I fear not enough.

I would love a different world order based on international cooperation in lieu of exploitation, but I do not see this as a probable outcome of tensions rising and reactionaries taking power.

It is definitely worth keeping an eye on the protofascist and overtly fascist movements gaining traction, since they pretty much tell us exactly how they are going to fuck things up.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

I appreciate that I am not alone in having a better take

Yeah, don't know about that, buddy. "Leftists are male-exclusive subtle fascists" reeks of "I have no clue about left wing ideology and my analysis of the world around me is based on a total lack of knowledge and a total lack of actual analysis", but sure. Could be that leftists just do not respond well to you in particular.

I am baffled by how humanity has managed to survive this long when so many men suck so fucking much. Then, when I think of it further, large portions of it was probably due to the women having no fucking choice, exemplifying one of many important ways in which men suck.

I do not tap into culture wars at all because that is some manufactured bullshit meant to take away focus on class struggle in the US, a country I am not even from. Feminism is not a product of this, but rather of the very same ideals that lay the foundation of socialism. Men abuse women in a multitude of ways all the time, and it is not close to symmmetric, which of course does not mean I refute the very real consequences of the converse.

Having the right positions ^TM^ on the issues you bring in at the end, does not make me respect your disjointed post above.

Urist ,

Only "talking back if experienced" is the reason for poverty wages. If they are willing to let us starve for profit, why can't we burn down their homes for bargaining power? Why let them put their value on us in the first place and accept what we are given?

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Both are true. Some educations create skillful workers, just like anyone practicing a trade over time acquires skills with regards to their tasks. That being said, many degrees are just manufacturing diplomas for middle class and bourgeoisie kids who want to feel superior (and have an excuse to be rewarded as if they were).

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar
Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Sure! Both speed and distance matters a lot for throughput. The advantage of pedestrian traffic is that designing for it reduces the distance people have to travel and that it combines very well in conjunction with public transport, unlike cars. Also, the speed of mixed traffic is inverse correlated to the number of vehicles, hence is a special case in this regard where throughput may decrease as the volume per lane increases. The overall point however is that a single train can substitute a staggering amount of private vehicles (and who doesn't love leaning back, listening to music and reading the news while commuting?).

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, no one is saying cars are worse for all purposes. If you want to take your family and dogs to a cabin in the mountains while also shopping for food along the way, it is probably going to be your best bet. Still, that is not what is pictured in the post. These are commuters that are probably moving from work to home (or vice versa), where cars really are the worst of most options. If the bus takes longer, it is probably an issue of allocation of funds for a shorter route and exclusive lanes for it.

Sure, not total in the sense that gun ownership is illegal, but you if you take a fucking gun to a city you will have your license revoked and probably go to prison. That is unless the gun was kept locked down, dismantled and securely separate from the ammunition in your trunk.

The point is to remove guns from people and places where they can do the most harm, like in a population centre. They have no reason to be there, and most of the world recognizes this.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

The question was specific with regards to a "private city", thus you can infer from context that the totality of "total" is limited to cities. This is also the reason I abstracted and specified it to mean population centres, because bringing guns to festivals is just as stupid and illegal most places.

I get the urge to be pedantic, but why be so after someone else has already pointed it out and I have answered them?

Is it possible to teach without a degree in the field your want to teach?

I think that teaching classes would be interesting. I have a lot of industry experience, but I never actually got a degree in the field I work in, and I don't have any sort of degree that deals with teaching. Is it possible to get a job as a teacher without those?...

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

I got asked if I wanted to teach for teachers after studying half a year at university. It is an advantage, often a formal requirement, but in praxis not necessary to have a degree in order to teach classes. Personal qualifications on the other hand is a must.

Should I join "free speech" alternatives?

Hello! I've been searching for a reddit alternative, and yes, I've picked Lemmy and Raddle, but here's the thing. My morbid curiosity is perked up, and a part of me wants to join the "free speech" alternatives, like Saidit, Poal, etc. What's wrong with me that I want to join toxic places? I mean, yes I'll find a whole new...

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, hence they reveal that they think the staus quo is the correct way of doing things... Though to be fair, being a little reactionary is hard wired in human brains and is especially prone to surface for those politically illiterate (or idiots in Greek).

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

I've always seen communism as a subclass of socialism, where socialism is the goal of classless, stateless society in which the public owns the means of production and distribute based on needs. Whereas communism is a way of attaining this goal, characterized by its materialistic focus and being revolutionary.

I know this differs from a lot of other uses for the terminology, but is there really a single definition of socialism that rules over the others (or communism for that matter, and does it even matter since they describe different important things)?

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

As one of the many types of socialism, communism became the dominant political tendency, along with social democracy, within the international socialist movement by the early 1920s.[34]

Excerpt from ProleWiki:

Its modern usage is almost always traced back to Karl Marx's usage of the term where he introduced the concept of scientific socialism alongside Friedrich Engels. The theory of scientific socialism described communism not as an idealistic, perfect society but rather as a stage of development taking place after a long, political process of class struggle. Marx, however, used the terms socialism and communism interchangeably and he drew no distinction between the two.
Lenin was the first person to give distinct meanings to the terms socialism and communism. The socialism/communism of Marx was now known simply as communism, and Marx's "transitional phase" was to be known as socialism.

I knew about this. I just do not really think anyone claiming superiority based on "define socialism and communism" as someone to be taken seriously, given that terminology is dependant on context and definitions on a base level are arbitrary if taking an axiomatic approach to theory.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

No, why do you ask?

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

They think western hegemony will fall anytime now if only Russia can "win" the war. Also, they think somehow a multi polar world order with Russia on the stage is going to be a step towards freeing the people of the earth.

Eh, do not hate on us or compare us to AfD just because we do not want to join the EU as full members. Our geography means we need tariffs to have a viable agricultural sector, which is important in times of crisis. We also have a lot of labour rights and stuff that is not compatible with the laissez faire ideology of the EU. It is bad enough that all public acquisitions have to abide EU's bullshit "competiton" rules, that impair public services because they have to shift value from benefit and quality to short sighted quantifiable metrics usually in form of untrue cost reports.

I really want Norway to be able to join the EU, but the EU has made itself an entity that would screw us over hard, effectively limiting our ability to participate beyond EEA. The EU has also decided that EEA members have no voting rights, making it hard for us to shape policy in a way so that we could join without conceding crucial societal issues to the bourgeouisie that effectively control the EU.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

We might be taking that step back anyways, but I am no quite sure we are in position to change the EU in significant ways.

This is a stupid take. Of course they should fear death. It means the loss of everything they loved, even though they won't experience said loss.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

There is. Also, if you want to mourn or fear that loss, you have to do it beforehand. Thus making the reaction to fear death completely rational for atheists.

The only reason costs of houses are so high in the first place is because they are lucrative investment objects, along with the fact that the most important part of city (and rural) planning, building homes, is largely left to private companies. You are assuming houses would be just as inaffordable without landlords, which is a problem of the current paradigm and not the one proposed.

Urist , (edited )
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Of course not the sole reason in a strict sense. In many places, there are also tendencies of centralization that increases the pressure of housing in cities and some cities are subjected to geography that does not allow them to expand blindly. Ultimately however, the problem is one of failed politics. With sufficient planning, we could solve all of this.

Landlords and private real estate companies, often the same entities, do propagate and amplify this problem. Removing them is a step in the right direction. Short term it would crash the housing market, which is great for anyone not speculating in housing. Long term it would allow for and necessitate publicly planned housing based on actual needs instead of profitability for people that never needed the house in the first place.

Solving it is also quite easy: Raise taxation on any homes owned by someone not inhabiting it by an additional 100 % or so for each unit. Buy back some housing to be able to provide free housing for those unable to get even a subsidized home for themselves. Then treat housing as an actual need and human right, similar to food, electricity and other infrastructure.

That would be good for almost everyone and also actually good for the economy, if you give a crap about it.

Urist , (edited )
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Of course, the general standard of houses decline the further back in time you go, but houses were a lot cheaper back in the days. Below is a figure of housing prices in Norway relative to wages at the time (mirroring the situation almost everywhere in the west):
https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/08d30114-552f-4df2-b5f1-b7726c8c39c7.png

Factoring in the increased production capabilities over the same period of time, the construction cost of houses are not that much higher. If we designed our communities better and had a better system for utilizing the increased labour power, we could have much more affordable housing and more beautiful and well functioning societies.

Do not let it sit right with you. This future was stolen from you.

@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, it is terrible :-( On average anyone who simply had grandparents living in Oslo has 1 000 000 NOK (about 100 000 USD) higher net worth than those that did not due to this increase.

Beta software marketing with "free accounts" and an open core compiler for a (probably) future paid web service tells me all I need to know.

Even though LaTeX has issues, not being an online service is not one of them.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Learning LaTeX and working around its quirks seems like a much better time investment than sidegrading to something that lives on premises given by a proprietary commercial project. If someone saw LaTeX and said "I want to make some version of this that is better", without alterior motives, they would probably just work on improving LaTeX (which a whole lot of people do).

Fancy does not mean better, and often is in many ways worse than plain old boring.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

From the LaTeX project:

The experience gained from the production and maintenance of LaTeX2e (the version you have been using for many years) had a major influence on our goals for future development and on new code which is now integrated into LaTeX.

A while ago we made the decision to drop the idea of a separate LaTeX3 format that would exist in parallel to LaTeX2e, but instead decided to gradually modernize LaTeX to keep it competitive in today’s world while maintaining compatibility methods for older documents.

I think this decision was pretty much a good one.

Overleaf does not modernize LaTeX in meaningful ways. It only adds cloud functionality and glossy appearance that you can get on dedicated editors anyways.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Overleaf are not benefactors that develop LaTeX for economic gains, unlike the situation with Typst that rely on it (to my knowledge). LaTeX is also cross platform, supported in tons of editors and can easily be converted to other formats with pandoc. It is also somewhat supported in other formats using implementations such as KaTeX for Markdown and Mathjax in HTML due to being the defacto standard for math typesetting.

Writing papers in LaTeX is a joy, not a pain. The end result is also a beautifully typeset document rivalled by none.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Nothing on Lemmy is posted on basis of "needs to be mentioned", which kind of makes your question moot. Tipping causes lower wages because it relieves the employers of the obligation of paying their workers. Also, I am talking about systemic change, so what is "occasional" or otherwise conditional is not really a valid counter to the general point.

Norms are susceptible to change. Just as they are perhaps changing for the worse where I live, it could change for the better somewhere else. This is dependant on people not being idiots, so I am rooting for you.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, I am an asshole for actually caring about worker's rights... Have you seen a single union that is pro tipping?

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

No, it does not because that is not how genes work. You are also not applying logic properly (and no, being wrong twice does not make it more right). A better analogy would be throwing garbage into the sea. Sure there might be some scraps of food on it that animals may eat, but you are also in fact contributing to killing them.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Literally everything on Lemmy was said for a reason.

Yeah, I just love defying the existence of causal relations. Sigh. It is not like you are totally misquoting me and yourself at all here and making "needs to be said" into "literally any fucking reason to say something".

But you as an individual choosing not to tip doesn't really impact that.

Maybe my original idea was to create awareness around an issue to maximize my individual impact? (this is also the reason why above, though it still does not count as on a "need to be said"-basis that you first introduced as the bar for saying something).

So now I already spent way too many words to make something clear that you only wanted to obfuscate in, what I assume must be, bad faith. Lastly, another obvious thing is that contributing to a greater whole is actually contributing towards it. Therefore I also care about my personal actions that say contribute towards climate change.

You are free to look at the statistics of how many more are paid less than the minimum wage (where that even needs to be a thing) in professions with tipping than those without. Also, please tip your teachers, cashiers at the grocery store, bus driver, garbage man, etc.. It is very nice when employers can use their god given right to labour without adequate compensation. You only make the world better by doing so because they get more $$$$$!
