"The union representing 48,000 academic workers across the University of California said Friday that its members at UC Santa Cruz will go on strike Monday over alleged worker rights and free speech violations, potentially dealing a blow to campus operations at a critical time during the final weeks of the spring quarter.

"The Santa Cruz strike would be the first of potentially several work stoppages that the union intends to launch one by one across campuses based on how receptive administrations are to pro-Palestinian activists’ demands."

One is a former school in the village of Juhor ad Dik, about a mile from the border with Israel. Protective sand berms appeared at the location between March 15 and March 30, according to satellite imagery. The rest of the village has been destroyed.

"Israeli troops also appear to be using the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, which once specialized in treatment for cancer patients, as a base of operations. The hospital shut down in the first week of November due to nearby airstrikes and lack of fuel, and thousands of cancer patients have been left without care. Let’s show Gabi Starr, Carol Folt, Gene Block, and countless other violent administrators that we will not let them avoid Palestine as long as they aid and abet genocide! No graduation as usual. What's surprising is not that it is dishonest, manipulative, fatuous, racist, Zionist, or manages to avoid mention of seven months of genocide. What's surprising is that this is the best that a school that claims itself as one of the elite institutions of higher learning in the country can come up with. I'm embarrassed for them.

Claremont FJP Statement on Student Encampment at Pomona

As the Israeli military invades Rafah and continues its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, Claremont students have set up an encampment on Pomona’s Marston Quad and are demanding that Pomona College cease its support of that genocide. Pomona College’s faculty and students have each voted overwhelmingly for divestment – the Pomona College board and President Gabi Starr must now commit to following through on the ethical, anti-genocide actions the Pomona community has called for. The students' principled protests are a response to the Pomona administration's failure to honor these student and faculty calls for disclosure and for a commitment to and process of divestment. Any disruption to campus activity is a result of the Pomona administration’s refusal to heed these calls from students and faculty.

The Claremont Faculty for Justice in Palestine reiterates our stance in support of both student activism and Palestinian liberation.

We reiterate our support for students’ actions of civil disobedience in protest of genocide and apartheid, including encampments, across the globe and especially in Claremont.

We reiterate our demand that campus administrations honor their commitments to freedom of political expression and keep their students, faculty, and staff safe from arrest and assault by militarized police.

We condemn any campus administration that chooses to bring in law enforcement rather than heed the campus community’s call to refuse complicity in genocide.

We reiterate our call for divestment, a call applicable to every one of the Claremont Colleges, but one that begins with Pomona because it holds the largest endowment among the Claremont Colleges.

We reiterate our call for a boycott of institutions complicit in the denial of Palestinian rights, beginning with Pitzer College Council’s vote to endorse an academic boycott of those institutions.

We stand in solidarity with students as they put themselves on the line for Palestinian liberation.

We stand in solidarity with Palestine.

Students from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) set up an encampment at the Belenes University Center for Social Sciences and Humanities (CUCSH), in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to demand decent conditions at the university.

The camp was set up at the end of a university and popular assembly that began at 11:00 am. In the assembly, the students discussed different problems both internationally and locally, and agreed to start the installation of the camp to make the following demands:

    • To clarify the relations and agreements that exist with the State of Israel, and in case they exist, to end such relations.
    • Break all types of relations with the genocidal State of Israel at the local, state and federal levels.
    • Dignified mental health care by the University of Guadalajara.
    • A dignified menstruation program that is universal and accessible to all menstruating women and individuals.

POMONA DIVEST FROM APARTHEID OFFICIAL STATEMENT Pomona College Students Begin Second Encampment Since October Latest University To Begin Encampment in National Wave of On Campus Pro-Palestine Organizing CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA - May 6, 2024 — At 5 A.M. On Monday, May 6th, Pomona College students erected their second encampment of the year on Graduation Lawn, where the stage for commencement is currently being constructed. In April, Starr called in 30+ riot police to arrest 20 students, 19 of whom were staging a sit-in at Alexander Hall to protest the college's forceful removal of a mock apartheid wall from Marston Quad. Students are urging the college to not repeat their mistakes: "Gabi Starr, do not opt for violence again. Listen to your community. The choice is yours." The encampment is the most recent development in a 7-month-long escalation campaign aiming to pressure the College to divest from weapons manufacturers and Israeli companies. Pomona College has responded to student Pro-Palestine organizing with unrelenting repression. Students are prepared to defend the encampment until their demands are met, and call upon the college to heed the overwhelming support for divestment in their community.

On Friday, students from the seven schools in Claremont, California, began an encampment at Pitzer College. Actions have occurred over the course of the weekend, including the following this evening:

Students occupied and shut down the “A Taste Of Pitzer” alumni music festival, giving alumni and administrators a true taste of the Pitzer community’s commitment to the radical pursuit of justice. Students are demanding that the Board of Trustees come to the nearby Gaza Solidarity Encampment, which remains active, and meet our three demands:

    – Disclosure and divestment of investments in companies complicit in Israeli apartheid and genocide as well as all weapons manufacturers

    – Official adoption of a policy of academic boycott of the complicit Israeli university system, as called for by Pitzer’s shared governance body in an overwhelming majority vote

    – An end to repression of student protesters, and revision of the Claremont Colleges’ protest policy by an elected committee of students and faculty.

We are in solidarity with the student encampments across the country reclaiming physical and political space for anti-war and pro-justice movements, and above all with the Palestinian people. We are committed to ending our colleges’ and the United States’ support of Israel’s genocidal campaign of ethnic domination and territorial expansion. NOT IN OUR NAME – NO BUSINESS AS USUAL!

"Campus panic is a sustained note in the American public conversation; from Vietnam to Gaza, it has never let up. Reliably, every few months something happens 'on campus' that the media inflates to the status of a national emergency: a speaker is invited, a speaker is disinvited, a speaker is not disinvited, a professor teaches, a student complains, a protest takes place. The media offers these incidents as scandals so fascinating and disturbing that they eclipse even a genocide.

"Thesis: The campus is a fantasy and a media trope. The camera produces the campus. The camera is at once a security camera—like the one installed in my department’s hallway—and the camera of the mass media. Each camera, the police and the media, feeds back into the other, in the paranoid spiral characteristic of panic: acceleration, escalation, inflation. (That these words also describe the tendencies of university tuitions, endowments, and administrator salaries is, perhaps, not merely coincidental.)

"To say that the campus is a fantasy and a trope is also to say that the campus does not actually exist. It is not a geographic site. Colleges and universities, like the one that employs me, have campuses, but these are not the campus. The campus is not even the genus of which discrete empirical institutions are species."

"Palestinian civil defence crews have uncovered a mass grave inside the Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza’s Khan Younis, with 180 bodies recovered so far, Al Jazeera has learned, as Israel has continued bombardment of the devastated coastal enclave for more than six months.

"Earlier this week, a mass grave was discovered at al-Shifa Hospital following a two-week siege. It was one of several mass graves found at al-Shifa – the largest medical facility in the coastal enclave."

Brief review of "Human Mourning" by José Revueltas

Winner of Mexico's National Prize for Literature (1943) and based loosely on Revueltas's time in Anáhuac, Nuevo León, where he was sent by the Mexican Communist Party to organize a strike among irrigation system workers (and for which he was sentenced to ten months of forced labor on the Islas Marías penal colony), this text is flawed but incredible. Stirring contemplations on the meaning of death, life, faith, revolution, and Mexico. The prose is immensely powerful, line after line took my breath away. I wish I didn't get this book from the library, I'd have underlined much of it.

While at times the narration is choppy, incomplete, and shifting, part of the reward is the challenge of reading it. On occasion appalling, violent, and crude, other moments are sublime and beautiful. If you're able to get your hands on a copy, I highly recommend it.
