Seeing #ActivityPub integration with #NodeBB is pretty cool!

For those who prefer a bulletin board interface for the #Fediverse, this is pretty darn attractive. Anyone who was active with Internet forums back in the '90s and '00s would love this quite a lot.

As many of us know, the problem with old Internet forums is that, while they provided a cozy community for folks who liked to follow specific topics, they often died because the likes of Facebook simply had a larger network effect.

But with NodeBB and ActivityPub, Internet forums may soon find that they have a network effect of hundreds of millions of people.

If you ever used Internet forums but have since stopped, would NodeBB's foray into the Fediverse have you increase your participation with them again?

Did you know that Mastodon has a nifty NSA-esque feature?

It stores all user IP addresses by default for a year :flan_nooo:

Exquisite retains the IP addresses for 4 (four) hours before being pruned completely.

Should we become the target for abuse, we can increase the retention. But one full year? That is just plain and utter madness - and a complete disregard for privacy and protecting the community :flan_molotov:

@h3artbl33d

The Mastodon instance I set up (https://digitalcourage.social) does not store IP addresses at all. The web server (nginx) never hands on an IP address to the Mastodon backend. It does not write any access log either.

It has been serving ca. 1,000 active users for years without any issues arising from the lack up IP address information.

What is a Fediverse Galaxy?

As more and more instances are providing multiple services under the same management, we need a term to talk about this type of arrangement. A Fediverse Galaxy is a collection of federated software that is provided by the same admin or collective.

@liaizon @fediverse

Sounds like a useful new term.

The table does not capture the fact that e.g. @stux is hosting several Mastodon instances. Should those instances hosted for others as a service be counted as part of the same galaxy?

Or would this be a Fediverse family (in analogy to Tor where relays run be the same entity are called a family).

@liaizon

I'm not questioning anything. I'm just wondering if "galaxy" is the same thing in the Fediverse as "relay family" is in the Tor world.
