I just unstickied it from the Blahaj side for you

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Either that, or you create an account on the communities home instance and give it mod privileges too, and that way you won't ever get caught short by federation issues, blocking etc.

Shouldn't you be taking pictures of birds though, haha.

Soon! It's Friday evening here, but I'll be out again this weekend :)

A side effect of aging for me is that now I like olives.

Of course. Otherwise they're just sparkling kalmatas...

Blahaj zone doesn't do downvotes, so that side of being visible on /all is a non issue. The only thing that really seems to be an issue is that we will get the odd post intended specifically for members of the community that get visibility in /all, and a bunch of non helpful/irrelevant replies.

I think it would be nice to be able to make some posts "community members only", but other than that, I generally think communities are helped by the increased of exposure that comes from /all

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Ideally, it wouldn't be either of those things.

Trans communities for example, Closeted trans folk benefit from people being able to see trans communities and browse them, and just lurk before they post or before they're ready to join a private community.

Yet at the same time, sometimes, members have questions that really only other trans people can answer. And there is no problem with other folk seeing it or even engaging with the content, but once it hits all, the ratio of useful answers goes down. So being able to just stop some posts from hitting all, without otherwise locking them down would be a nice option

So, the things I appreciate as an admin are

a) Make sure you state whether it's simply a matter of breaking community rules, or whether it needs an admins attention. As it stands now, admins see all reports made for all communities on our instances, which can be a lot. I leave reports for communities that I don't moderate, but they then sit around until a moderator actions them. And the large incoming volume, plus the older ones hanging around can make it hard to tell at a glance which ones require an admins eyes.

b) If it's not immediately obvious from the reported post, tell us where to find the context we need to see why the post is a problem. "Look at posters history" / "Will make sense if you read the previous post" etc.

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It's helpful. The issue is the moderation with mass removal of content doesn't always federate in ways that are obvious. And it was worse with older versions of lemmy.

Report it, and at least your instance admins can remove it from your instance

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

"Has a future" in this context means "Streaming media without explicit ownership rights will continue to be here/relevant in to the future, unlike the idea of 'owning' digital media"

Before Musk, Twitters advertising was driven by engagement, and engagement was driven by encountering things that made you angry. So they were slow to respond to anything but the most egregious cases of hatred and bigotry.

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It doesn't block them though does it? My understanding is that it simply filters them so that you don't see them anymore. They're still there doing their thing though.

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Does this not address the federation issue that is causing some instances to fall ever further behind lemmy.world?

How old is the oldest building in the town you live in?

To those from the Western hemisphere, it's always fascinating to hear that some homes and businesses from the times of the Greek philosophers still have inhabitants, and then you remember that the Western hemisphere is itself not without its own examples, for example some Mexican villages still have temples from the times of the...

Like 3/4 of programs will never remember their size and position, so you have to make a never ending list of kwin window rules, which then end up affecting other windows you don’t want to

That's Wayland specific isn't it? X11 behaves a lot better in that regard

Does it have smart playlists that can combine other playlists?

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Now, if you tell me it's subsonic compatible and I can use that smartlist feature with subsonic music as a source, I'll have found my new music player :)

ada ,

Airsonic is fine! Looks like it should do what I need!

ada ,

So so close, but it doesn't import my ratings and play counts through arsenic, only the raw music, which means none of my playlists will work

Does anybody else feel guilty being suspicious of anybody in a black hoodie with the hood up?

Specifically because I live in a hot climate, I'm always fighting the feeling of being suspicious of anybody I pass in the streets with a hoodie pulled up. I feel guilty because of racial profiling associated with hoodies, but gotta protect myself and my family, especially because in many cases the perpetrators of assault and...

So, I was given some advice for situations like this that changed my life.

The first thing that comes to mind in these moments isn't what matters. It's what a life time of indoctrinated racism/classism/sexism etc looks like. The thing that comes to mind here isn't necessarily what you think, it's what you've been taught to think,

What matters is what you do next, after the thought has popped in to your mind.

I was raised in a very racist environment, and I struggled with feeling guilt every time some racist thought I'd been trained with popped in to my head, because that's not the person I want to be. Reframing it like this allowed me to stop getting hung up on the guilt part, and work on the part that actually means something

Can you live without YouTube ?

Today in a Privacy community a post about YouTube. No word about privacy but all about which software or settings are needed to watch videos and the money needed to host videos. It made me wonder whether some of you can lead a meaningful life without YouTube. Or will a cold turkey bring the worst out of you ?

ada Mod ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The only thing I use it for is Dreaming Spanish, and it's months since I've watched any of that content, so I'll say yeah, I think I'll be ok in a world without Youtube

Animation - A community for enthusiasts and fans to discuss all things animation

Hi all, when I first joined Lemmy (and the fediverse broadly) I was interested in having discussions around animated media. Unfortunately it seems all the existing communities were either dead, inactive, had a slightly different (usually narrower) scope, or some combination of the 3....

ada ,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

While I personally think they aren’t judging me, I sometimes feel like I’m doing exactly what you have described when I compliment people. I try to compliment people whenever I can in order to make them feel good and while it works, I feel like I’m above them for doing so.

Yep, I struggle giving compliments for the same reason! So I give compliments in the way I can receive them, which is to compliment the things that people have said/done or are planning etc, rather than complimenting the person.
