That's exactely what happened in my mind when I was getting started with Linux (kind of), although it's arguably a habit that comes from using Windows where people don't really think about OS users and permissions
I don't think references are variables: you can't modify them, and AFAIR you can't have pointers to them, with the possible but unlikely exception of non-static member references.
Enhancement? No, everything I have a problem with is explicitly intended behavior and GNOME devs are infamous for their everyone is stupid except me mentality
They do provide a free service (GTK's file chooser), one that I find horrible and inconsistent (as per the thread) and intentionally so (on issues tangential to example that I found, although the proposed configurable behavior would be nice) - so I won't even entertain the thought of trying and contributing to it, as it has been suggested.
I don't know what is insufferable about that, other than the initial criticism...
C++ is an awful candidate for a first programming language to learn, at least nowadays - it is very powerful, but it's also full of foot-guns and past a certain point the learning curve becomes a wall
C is no beginner heaven either, printf is its own can of "why can this function have any number of arguments and why does the compiler have to complain about the formatting every 25 milliseconds" worms

Nah, go public and commit to a restless chase that gets exponentially demanding and caters to a bunch of disinterested bottom-feeders rather than improving services and products for the customers
I hear X4 without DLCs is barebones, I got them all when Steam discounted them so I wouldn't know but I think the terran and boron DLCs are pretty important.
Mods? probably a cheat package if you don't truly hate yourself as long as you only use them when desperate.
How to get into it? You need lots of patience, the game's learning curve is very steep and other than consooming guides on youtube the only way to learn is to simply play and eventually look up information online when you get stuck - which may be a lot to ask of a game that costs 50€ excluding DLCs.
Perhaps you can try out X3:TC to see if you like how the series works, it came out in 2008 but it costs 16€, only has one paid expansion, and Egosoft published a free DLC in 2021 that is basically an official unofficial patch to the engine.
Firefox containers are basically just named cookie sets: they don't have per-container settings, they just let you create containerized tabs that don't share cookies between each other (maybe local and session storage too, idk).
They're useful if you want to make it a bit harder for websites to track you around, or for selectively keeping you logged into a website (alt account usage comes to mind), but your use case seems to be centered around actual profiles.
If you're frequently creating new containers I suggest the Temporary Containers extension, it saves you having to manually clear everything when you're done with a specific session and want to start another
