Apparently this is the one thing which is controlled by a single gene, and works as you were taught in school with dominant and recessive traits.

Nothing else does, including the things you were taught like eye and hair colour - they are much more complicated.

Hmm, maybe it's one per ear?!

I don't think I've ever used Dear to start an email; always Hi for as long as I remember.

I don't like To, it always seems like a command rather than a greeting. I write it on cards and stuff but it always leaves a niggling feeling of wrongness.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing which worries me. I suppose if it's a recipe which doesn't need precise measurements it doesn't matter.

Not quite the same as Stones and Kilogrammes are both units of weight. Using cups is like weighing somebody using those luggage size baskets in the airport.

Some good answers here, thanks everyone, I've learnt some stuff today. 🙂

I'm amazed they are that uncommon. Here (UK) you can walk into a supermarket and pick them up for less than £20.

@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Depends what it is. In this instance I was buying cups of fruit, how many cups are there to a punnet? I already have the weight on the packaging, so if I know the weight I need it's much easier.

If it calls for 200g of aubergine, then you can weigh that at the shop... It's more convenient at that end, and you can get the right amount.

Depends how many sugars. At least three heaped teaspoons should qualify, two is borderline.

Whats the best Universally usable CRT Monitor for computers all trough the 80s and 90s?

With my little Computer Collection ever growing, I think its time to get myself an actual Monitor to use these Machines. So im wondering, what Monitor has most if not all Connection Types and modes of operation to be compatible with most/ if not all Computer from the 80s till the 90s?...

The Microvitec M1438 is the one I remember always being recommended.

I didn't know I needed this. In fact, I'm still not sure but thanks for posting it!

If you're in the UK (and I suspect you're not, but I post this partly to help out others in a similar situation), the NHS have a "Talking Therapies" service for depression and anxiety. You can self refer so there's no need to get diagnosed by a doctor first.

What state is that first 200 year old bun in?

It reminds me of the guy in Iceland who preserved the last Big Mac. It never went mouldy.

What other parts of the fediverse are you using?

Besides Lemmy which I love a lot, I'm also enjoying a microblog platform called Catodon, which is much less basic than Mastodon and has a very nice interface. Pixelfed is also fantastic if you like photography rather than just being Instagram influencer nonsense. Where else are you hanging out? What have you liked and not...

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Mastodon, Bookwyrm, Mbin, and I'm also on a test instance of Takahē (Mastodon compatible microblogging platform) which I quite like for the multiple personalities feature.

There's also some sort of soft blocking option, which largely hides the instance AIUI but still gives the ability to follow users. This seems like a better option rather than completely defederating.

If Meta want to scrape your data they can do that anyway. All defederation does is stops you looking at their stuff (which, as you say, can be blocked at the user level anyway)

A bit like the Channel Islands - they use British Pounds but if you try to use them on the mainland they'll not be accepted. Other way round is fine.

Just wanted to say a quick hello to all the other women out there on Lemmy

I've been happily posting away here on two accounts since just before the Great Migration, and have no problem being openly a woman on the internet. Up to and including correcting people who assume I'm a guy, and even occasionally acknowledging the existence of periods....

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Hello! Not a woman, but from what I've heard I understand the hiding. Frankly the men that do that sort of thing need a kick up the arse and I will never understand what it's supposed to achieve.

I think that was quite common in that era - probably from typewriters which had a shift lock rather than a caps lock (as due to the mechanical nature it isn't possible to shift just the alphabetic characters on a typewriter). Commodore used Shift Lock on their computers pre-Amiga (also it was a physical clicky button, which is the most satisfying thing ever).

What Meta’s Fediverse Plans Mean for Threads Users ( www.wired.com )

Meta is treading carefully, doing a phased implementation while continuing conversations with Fediverse leaders. This will give the company more time to iron out some of the integration kinks. “Do we adapt the protocol to be able to support this?” Lambert asks. “Or do we try to do some kind of interesting, unique...

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

I don't know. Mastodon already supports audio posts, how does that federate? Why can't Threads do the same thing?

I find this very useful to read paywalled articles that Google has managed to index!

OK, I see why they might want to get rid of it.

I had a car with a leaky radiator. I would fill it up with water in the morning and drive to work. If I didn't it would start overheating. I don't remember filling it again on the way back. Put up with that for weeks. I think I only got it fixed because the weather warmed up and it was no longer sufficient to cool it. Or maybe it was the same problem as the heating not working and after a few weeks of wearing multiple layers and getting absolutely frozen I finally got it fixed. They may have been two separate issues/occasions, this was around 2003.
