Some of America’s greatest triumphs, like the moon landings or the D-Day landings, succeeded because of science.

The current anti-science campaign by the political class makes zero sense.

Explain to me like I'm 10 years old: Is the Biden tariffs on electric vehicles, batteries, and solar panels coming from China motivated 100% by politics (and maybe racism), or is there some other (more legit) reason to do it?

Harold Sverdrup, a well known oceanographer, was born in Sogndal. The unit of water flow in the ocean was named after him (i.e., one sverdrup (Sv) = 1 million cubic meters per second).

Yet there’s no indication anywhere in Sogndal that he’s from here. Someone should fix that.

Well it’s time to head north - and as we do it has decided to snow so our little icebreaker looks like (northern hemisphere) Christmas .. likely no more sea ice or bergs … we likely have some proper waves ahead for the 6 day transit… although there is a path through the waves

No vehicles should be moving through an intersection when pedestrians are crossing.

davidho OP ,
@davidho@mastodon.world avatar

@atthenius @Brad_Rosenheim In London, there’s no turning on red and often when pedestrians have a “walk” sign, all vehicles have red lights. It’s the least they could do for driving on the wrong side of the road.

Just found a new (to me) psychology phrase: "pluralistic ignorance". It refers to people holding one view but mistakenly assuming that the majority of others hold a different view, so they keep quiet. Very relevant for climate change action, where lots want action but think they're in the minority.

davidho ,
@davidho@mastodon.world avatar

@helenczerski I thought it meant being ignorant of things that @pluralistic has said.

You can do the same in PowerPoint but it makes the computer screen really sticky.

When those of us who work on CO₂ removal (CDR) meet, it’s apparent that no one wants to do this and no one thinks it’s easy.

It’s far easier and cheaper to stop emitting CO₂.

The fact that some of the smartest people I know decide to work on CDR signals our desperation.
