Map showing the path of totality of the solar eclipse in Canada on April 8, 2024 ( www.asc-csa.gc.ca )

On April 8, 2024, a spectacular and rare celestial event is set to unfold over Canada, the United States and Mexico – a total solar eclipse. As the Moon aligns perfectly between Earth and the Sun, temporary darkness will sweep across parts of the country, captivating countless spectators.

Here's a couple of differences:
With totality, the stars become visible again. The darkness is such that air temperature drops like at sunset. Birds stop signing, and insects start chirping. Also, i think you can see the sun's corona.
While the sun is totally blocked, you can look at it with naked eyes.

I'm not sure how much of this occurs with a 95% eclipse... I would encourage anyone to go to the nearest place to see totality. I will personally visit family living 2 hours drive away to be in the totality zone.

These reports tend to focus on measuring the outcome, because that's the measurable KPI.

It leaves as an exercise to the reader to guess the cause, and your comment shows exactly what i believed for years. "There is an inequality of outcome because people typically act differently".

I now realize that the gender pay gap is just the outcome of bias in the workplace... Whether conscious or inconscious. We must recognize them and actively try to counteract their effects of we want to reduce the gender pay gap. Something often criticized as "reversed sexism".

Here we go again... The web, which is what most people think about when saying "internet", is an European invention.

So the low level stuff is American, but higher level stuff is European. But then again, were could claim that "web 2.0" was invented by American companies.

Internet is 70% American?

Bunyan sounds the same as some old French Canadian swear word, but is written differently. I think the real spelling would be something like "bon yenne", and also resembles a French Canadian folklore named "Bon Jean".

If the local language is Cantonese, but the government is forcing to use Mandarin in law and other official businesses, to me it sounds the same as forcing Ukrainians to speak Russian (in the old USSR), Catalans to speak Spanish, and French Canadian to speak English. It's soft cultural assimilation.

I don't know much about the local language usage in HK, so i could be wrong though.

Cops ripped for arresting reporter trying to ask Chrystia Freeland questions ( torontosun.com )

Y'know, assault is generally defined as causing a person to fear for their safety. What these cops were doing was absolutely assault, bumping into someone's shoulder is not. Plus it kinda looks like a football play the aide, Freeland and the cop were playing.

I think it’s set up this way so buyers can’t get back to Sony to ask for a free replacement if the media can’t be used anymore.

Let’s say you buy a disk that contains a movie. You din’t buy the right to watch that movie forever, because if the disk breaks, you need to buy a new copy.

However, we could argue that this is just a symptom of a short industry… If my backpack breaks, even after 10 years, the company will replace it free of charge!

i_love_FFT ,
@i_love_FFT@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok… I like the interface of StremIO, which looks like a service aggregator (ie I can open the movie on a streaming service i have access to), but I don’t like the fact that I can’t pre-download and seed less popular files. It supports debrid services, but from the technical description, thesec seems to be leech-equivalent to seedboxes…

What would be a good drop -in replacement? Something that works on google TVs and is easy to maintain?

i_love_FFT ,
@i_love_FFT@lemmy.ml avatar

From my early torrent days, we used to say that any torrent we dont seed back to at rast 1:1 is bad for the network (leeching). I can see why there is a desire to block StremIO clients, but if it was modified to see back to some ratio, it would be nicer.

As for debrid, it’s a bit too “centralised” for me still… I’ve read that it’s a major weak point in the system and that servers are often unavailable. That’s why i like the resilience of torrents. (Plus the sharing aspect. Sharing is caring!)

Takeaways on fine water, a growing trend for the privileged in a world that's increasingly thirsty ( apnews.com )

Millions of people worldwide don’t have clean water to drink, even though the United Nations deemed water a basic human right more than a decade ago. Yet, even as extreme heat dries up more aquifers and wells and leaves more people thirsty, luxury water has become fashionable among the world’s privileged, who uncap and taste...

i_love_FFT ,
@i_love_FFT@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s a trick to start creating a water market. It will slowly and subtly grow until any drinkable water that doesn’t taste like shit will be considered “fine water”.

Then, you’ll get capitalists assholes saying that anything better than shit water should not be considered a right…

That’s true! I have lots of friends that do competitive cycling and they’re all nice people. When they train, they avoid cities.

The problematic ones are those who run red lights, who cut and curse at recreationsl cyclists in city bike laces while going 50km/h. They almost always wear skin tight shorts and an expensive-looking helmet.

That being said, I think we can agree that every generalization is bad!

They’re taking about atheists. That’s it.

Edit: Basically, this is a click-bait title where they intentionally keep the title’s meaning mysterious, like it’s a new viral trend or something dangerous. They define:

These so-called “nones" — atheists, agnostics, or nothing in particular —

i_love_FFT ,
@i_love_FFT@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, I suppose my second sentence is somewhat diminitive… The article itself is more of a “dossier” than a single article, and gatekeeping discussions only for those who read the full article(s) kind of discourages discussions on the topic.

The first thing I wanted to convey is that they’re trying to redefine something that already exists. Today I learned that “atheism” has such a loaded baggage to you and the article’s authors that they’re is a need for a new word!

Too me, that is quite the revelation: everything I read in the article is exactly what I understand to be “atheism”! I’ve known that in some places on the world, it can be worst to be atheist than to be of the “wrong” religion… I hope using “the none phenomena” will help these people be safer…

Yeah, it’s a really big breakthrough! I noticed while reading the abstract that it uses lead in its molecular (cristaline?) structure. It’s a big thing in electronics to avoid lead because when soldering it releases harmful gas, I was just making a joke about this… Yet I hope to someday be able to purchase superconducting wire spools and simply substitute copper in our procedures!

This, in my opinion, is the number one source of road rage: drivers unrealistically expect to zoom around fast, yet it never happens. So they rage.
