@leaton01 @academicchatter @edutooters surely if we're not letting our students use "generative" "AI", we shouldn't either?

Am I the only one who's bothered by the "covid is making everyone stupider" discourse? Yes there is credible research showing significant post-covid cognitive slowing (even in the absence of other long covid symptoms). But there's something particularly and insidiously ableist about the way it keeps getting presented as a gotcha.

@villavelius @mbojan @academicchatter I mean, that's where all the financial incentives for academics are?

@villavelius @mbojan @academicchatter oh I know. My point is, the issue is systemic.

@actuallyautistic

When someone says “sorry to hear that” in response to sad or painful news is that empathic/compassionate or is it self centred and the speaker is just sad they have had to hear the news ?

elmyra ,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@Hyperiontrails @actuallyautistic I think it's a standard formulation to express the intention of compassion. I don't think, generally, that people use it in a self-centred way the way you describe, but I think it can be used as a cop-out: "I have said the ritual words and don't have to engage further." So whether it's actually compassionate depends on other words/actions around it and the relationship you have with that person.

Boosting this for @academicchatter: friends, a question: I've been asked to peer review a book manuscript and offered an "honorarium in books". I don't work for for profit companies for free so I'm not doing it. They have also asked me to recommend other potential reviewers if I can't do it. I'm on the fence as to whether to do that because, again, they'll be asking for free labour. What are your thoughts?

elmyra OP ,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@ergative @academicchatter I am a former academic, I know all this. I also refuse to participate in this system because it's exploitative and abusive, so my question is can I justify enabling it by giving others the "opportunity" to participate.

elmyra OP ,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@ergative @academicchatter When I still used to publish I strongly preferred fully open access non-profit journals, and both my books are published by a publisher who pays their peer reviewers (and paid me to peer review others' work).

elmyra OP ,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@ergative @academicchatter that's actually a really good point, thank you. 😁

elmyra OP ,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@ScottMacShack @academicchatter who exactly pays peer reviewers for their labour?

elmyra OP ,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@ScottMacShack @academicchatter Must be nice to be a faculty member with job security. You're in the minority. Also IME even for most faculty members their job description and workload calculations do not account for peer review.
